IBHJAiShares iBonds 2030 Term High Yield and Income ETF

In short

IBHG Most target-maturity bond ETFs stick to Treasuries and investment grade. IBHG runs the same ladder-rung playbook in high yield: a basket of dollar-denominated junk and other income bonds all maturing in 2027.

IBHJ A junk-bond fund with an end date. IBHJ holds roughly 300 high-yield corporate bonds all maturing around 2030, then winds up and pays out: the maturity-date discipline of a single bond, spread across a portfolio.

Stated mandate

IBHG The fund seeks to track an index of U.S.-dollar-denominated, high-yield and other income-generating corporate bonds maturing in 2027.

IBHJ The fund seeks to track an index of high-yield and income-generating corporate bonds maturing in 2030.

Why people hold it

  • IBHG A rare rung: it tracks the Bloomberg 2027 Term High Yield and Income Index, so you get a dated high yield slice instead of a bond fund that rolls its maturities forever.
  • The 2027 end date sits in the mandate itself, which is what makes ladder-building possible: stack terms, know when each rung comes due.
  • Income lands monthly, and credit risk is spread across roughly 90 bonds rather than a handful of names.
  • IBHJ Defined maturity is the whole point. The fund terminates on or about December 15 of its named year and distributes substantially all net assets to then-current holders, a bond-style end date on a high-yield sleeve.ishares.com
  • About 300 bonds instead of one issuer's fate. In high yield, that spread matters: a single default is a dent in the portfolio rather than the whole position.ishares.com
  • Pays monthly, and it sits in a full iBonds lineup of maturity years, so rungs can be built around it without leaving the same index family.ishares.com

Worth knowing

  • IBHG It charges 0.35% a year against a target-maturity cohort that typically runs near 0.10%. High yield credit work costs more than buying Treasuries.
  • High yield means issuer default and downgrade risk, a different animal from the Treasury and investment-grade rungs of the same shelf (IBTJ, IBDU).
  • The clock cuts both ways. As 2027 approaches the portfolio shortens and the fund is built to wind down, not to keep running.
  • IBHJ At 0.35% a year, it charges more than the plain investment-grade target-maturity rungs (IBDU and BSCU run 0.10%). That gap is the price of the high-yield version.
  • Thinly traded next to the larger target-maturity funds, so bid-ask spreads can be wider and bigger orders take more care to fill.
  • These are non-investment-grade bonds, with greater default and price risk than higher-rated debt. Distributions vary rather than acting like a fixed coupon, and the portfolio shifts to cash in the final months.ishares.com

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
