SCHYASchwab International Dividend Equity ETF

In short

IDV One of the original international dividend ETFs (2007). IDV runs a tight list, roughly 100 higher-yielding companies across developed markets outside the US, and sticks closely to the index it tracks.

SCHY Schwab's dividend playbook with a passport: an index of non-US high payers filtered for sustained dividends, financial strength and low volatility, run for 0.08% a year while the typical fund in its group charges 0.50%.

Stated mandate

IDV The Fund seeks to track an index of relatively high-dividend-paying equities in non-U.S. developed markets, providing exposure to dividend-focused international companies.

SCHY The fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, an index of high-dividend-yielding stocks issued by companies outside the United States. Its index methodology emphasizes sustained dividend payments, relative financial strength, and lower volatility.

Why people hold it

  • IDV A 2007 launch makes it one of the longest-running funds in the international dividend aisle, and it has grown into a multi-billion-dollar fund that trades actively.
  • Follows the Dow Jones EPAC Select Dividend Index closely, one of the tighter index implementations among its dividend-screen peers.
  • Pays quarterly and draws its income from developed markets outside the US, a different dividend pool than an S&P 500 income fund.
  • SCHY Costs 0.08% a year against a 0.50% median for international dividend screens, one of the cheapest ways to rent this strategy.
  • The index does more than chase yield: it screens for sustained payers, relative financial strength and lower volatility. Cash goes out quarterly.
  • A plain passive tracker of the Dow Jones International Dividend 100 Index that has hugged its benchmark closely, with a multibillion-dollar base and shares that trade actively.
  • Stands among the stronger implementations in its international dividend peer group on cost, tracking and tradability.

Worth knowing

  • IDV The 0.50% expense ratio sits at the category median but far above cheap index rivals such as VYMI (0.07%) and SCHY (0.08%).
  • About 100 names is a narrow slice of the developed world, so individual countries, sectors and companies swing results more than in a broad international index.
  • Holdings are priced in foreign currencies, so exchange-rate moves feed into returns alongside the dividends themselves.ishares.com
  • SCHY Roughly 130 stocks, a narrower net than a broad international fund. Dividend screens naturally bunch up in a handful of sectors and countries.
  • Launched in 2021, so it carries a shorter live record than the veterans of international dividend investing.
  • Two neighbors shave the fee a touch further: VYMI and VIGI charge 0.07%, though each screens for different things.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
