INCOCColumbia India Consumer ETF

INDAAiShares MSCI India ETF

In short

INCO Most India ETFs hand you the whole market: banks, software, energy. INCO buys the shopping cart instead, a concentrated basket of Indian consumer discretionary and staples companies, tracking a rules-based index since 2011.

INDA The default India trade for US investors: one big, heavily traded fund holding roughly 160 mostly larger Indian companies, running since 2012. Priced below the typical India fund, though it is not the category's price leader.

Stated mandate

INCO The Fund is passively managed and seeks to track an unaffiliated index while investing predominantly in Indian securities. Its exposure is concentrated in consumer discretionary and consumer staples companies.

INDA The fund seeks to track an index composed of Indian equities, providing targeted exposure to India.

Why people hold it

  • INCO A direct play on Indian household spending: consumer discretionary and staples only, not a thin sliver buried inside a broad-market index.
  • Passive and rules-based, following the Indxx India Consumer Goods Index, and it has stuck closely to that stated mandate.
  • Live since 2011, carrying the same consumer mandate through more than a decade of Indian market cycles. Long track record for a niche theme.
  • INDA Charges 0.61% a year against a 0.75% median for US-listed India funds, so the access fee sits below the category's going rate.
  • A multi-billion-dollar fund and among the most actively traded in its category, so getting in or out rarely means fighting a thin order book.
  • Tracks the MSCI India Index with no side bets, and rates as one of the strongest implementations among US-listed India funds. Live since 2012.

Worth knowing

  • INCO The 0.76% expense ratio sits right at the India-fund median, but well above broad options like FLIN at 0.19%. A focused slice prices higher than the whole market.
  • Roughly 30 stocks in two sectors: individual names carry real weight, and a consumer-led selloff leaves nowhere to hide.
  • A smaller, thinly traded fund, so spreads can run wider than on the big broad-India names. Income has not been part of the story here.
  • INDA FLIN runs a broad India index for 0.19%. Here you pay up for the deeper trading and the longer live record.
  • One country, one currency. Rupee moves land in your return alongside Indian share prices.
  • Roughly 160 holdings skewed to India's bigger listed names; the small-cap tier sits in a separate fund (SMIN).

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
