In short

ISPY Most covered-call funds write one option a month. ISPY writes them daily, slicing S&P 500 premium into small pieces while still aiming for long-term returns in line with the index itself.

PEPS Active management at index-fund pricing. PEPS holds a U.S. large-cap base, then writes S&P 500 calls against offsetting long exposure: a beta-neutral overlay built to add return rather than swap upside for income.

Stated mandate

ISPY The Fund seeks high income potential through a daily-options covered-call strategy and seeks long-term returns consistent with the S&P 500 Index.

PEPS The Fund seeks long-term capital appreciation. It is actively managed, using a U.S. large-cap equity base and beta-neutral call overwriting on the S&P 500 with offsetting long exposure to seek incremental total return.

Why people hold it

  • ISPY The daily-options twist: premium is harvested in small, frequent slices rather than one monthly bet, and the fund also targets long-run returns consistent with the S&P 500.proshares.com
  • Income is a stated policy, not a byproduct: ProShares pays monthly and declares a minimum annual distribution target of 6%.proshares.com
  • At 0.56%, the expense ratio runs below the median for S&P 500 option-income funds, a corner of the market where fees often climb past 1%.
  • A multi-billion-dollar fund holding roughly 500 stocks, and it does what the label says: the equity sleeve stays close to the index it references.
  • PEPS 0.10% is index-fund pricing for an actively managed strategy. Even the cheap, well-regarded active peers cost more: DFAU at 0.12%, FELC at 0.18%.
  • Not a covered-call fund. The sold S&P 500 calls are paired with offsetting long exposure, so the overlay seeks incremental total return instead of capping upside.
  • Ordinary 1940 Act ETF wrapper, U.S. large-cap equity, distributions paid quarterly. The complexity lives in the overlay, not the tax paperwork.
  • Cost is the standout: the typical active U.S. equity ETF in this group charges several times what PEPS does, and fee drag is the one input you know in advance.

Worth knowing

  • ISPY Cheaper shelf-mates exist. IVVW charges 0.25%, PBP 0.29%, GPIX and BALI 0.35%, all writing calls on the same large-cap universe.
  • Selling calls every day trims what you keep in a fast rally, while the full drawdown of holding the S&P 500 still rides along underneath.
  • ProShares discloses that distributions may include return of capital, meaning part of a payout can be your own principal handed back.proshares.com
  • PEPS Launched in November 2024. The overlay has not yet run through a full market cycle, so there is limited history to judge it on.
  • A small, thinly traded fund. Bid-ask spreads can run wider than a mega-cap index ETF's, which shows up most on larger orders.
  • The options leg adds moving parts: short index calls lose value in a sharp rally, and the offsetting long exposure is what has to make that back.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
