IYZCiShares U.S. Telecommunications ETF

XLCAState Street Communication Services Select Sector SPDR ETF

In short

IYZ One of the original sector ETFs, trading since 2000 and still literal about telecom: U.S. phone, internet and communication companies, with index caps that stop any one carrier from swallowing the portfolio.

XLC Launched in 2018, XLC bottles the communication services corner of the S&P 500: search, social, streaming and the phone companies, in one 0.08% wrapper that trades heavily all day.

Stated mandate

IYZ The fund seeks to track an index of U.S. equities in the telecommunications sector and provides diversified access to U.S. companies offering phone, internet, and communication services.

XLC The fund seeks to track, before expenses, the price and yield performance of the Communication Services Select Sector Index.

Why people hold it

  • IYZ Running since 2000, through the fiber build-out, the wireless wars and the streaming rewrite. Quarter-century histories are rare in sector ETFs.
  • Literal about telecom by mandate: U.S. companies selling phone, internet and communication services, not the wider media-and-internet basket its broad peers carry.ishares.com
  • The index trims at each quarterly rebalance: no single issuer above 22.5%, and issuers over 4.5% capped at 45% combined. The giant carriers get pruned by rule, not by hope.sec.gov
  • Actively traded with BlackRock's iShares plumbing behind it, and cash goes out on a quarterly schedule.
  • XLC Costs 0.08% a year, a fraction of the typical fund in this sector group and tied with the cheapest of them (FCOM at 0.08%, VOX at 0.09%).
  • A multi-billion-dollar fund and one of the busiest tickers in its category, so getting in and out is rarely the hard part.
  • Clean, rules-based job: it shadows the Communication Services Select Sector Index closely, one of the tightest implementations in its peer group.ssga.com
  • Large-cap only: constituents come from the S&P 500, spanning telecom, media, entertainment and interactive media, with S&P capping rules limiting how big any one name gets.ssga.comspglobal.com

Worth knowing

  • IYZ The fee is a step up: 0.37% versus single-digit basis points on the broad communication services trackers in this group (XLC, FCOM, VOX). That is the toll for the narrower cut.
  • Concentrated by design: roughly two dozen holdings, and the cap rules still leave room for one issuer to sit near 22.5% of the fund.ishares.comsec.gov
  • One sector, one country. It rides U.S. telecom, so its path can look nothing like a total-market fund's in either direction.
  • XLC This is the most top-heavy neighborhood in the index. Even with capping at rebalance, a few mega-cap internet names set the tone for the whole fund.spglobal.com
  • One sector out of eleven in the S&P 500, so it tracks ad budgets, subscriptions and phone bills rather than the broad market.spglobal.com
  • FCOM and VOX sit within a penny of the same fee, so the real choice is index breadth: XLC stops at the S&P 500. Distributions come quarterly.ssga.com

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
