JCPICJPMorgan Inflation Managed Bond ETF

STIPAiShares 0-5 Year TIPS Bond ETF

In short

JCPI Most inflation funds just buy TIPS. JCPI builds a core bond portfolio and layers CPI-U swaps on top, an active route to a similar inflation-linked payoff, run by J.P. Morgan since 2010 and wrapped in an ETF in 2022.

STIP The short-fuse inflation hedge. STIP holds only inflation-linked Treasuries maturing inside five years, keeping the inflation link while sidestepping most of the long-bond rate swings. Three basis points a year.

Stated mandate

JCPI The fund seeks to deliver inflation-protected total return by combining a core bond portfolio with actively managed inflation swaps and tactical trades.

STIP The fund seeks to track an index of U.S. Treasury inflation-protected securities with maturities under five years, offering inflation hedging while managing duration risk.

Why people hold it

  • JCPI The mechanism is the story: CPI-U swaps combined with a core bond portfolio, designed to act like a portfolio of inflation-protected bonds without simply owning them.sec.gov
  • Actively run. The team manages the swap book and makes tactical trades, measured against the intermediate 1-10 year TIPS index rather than the long end of the curve.jpmorgan.com
  • Not a startup strategy: it dates to 2010 as a mutual fund and converted into an ETF in April 2022, carrying its track record across.jpmorgan.com
  • Pays monthly, with the core spread across roughly 700 bonds.
  • STIP Three basis points a year, roughly a quarter of the typical fee in its Treasury ETF group. On cost, this is near the floor for bond funds.
  • Maturities capped under five years by design, so the inflation adjustment stays and the long-duration price swings largely do not.
  • Running since 2010, a multi-billion-dollar fund that trades actively. Plain index construction, US Treasuries only.
  • Sits in the upper half of the Treasury bond ETFs we cover, one of the stronger short-maturity builds in that group.

Worth knowing

  • JCPI Active costs money. The fee sits above the category median, while index trackers like SCHP and VTIP charge 0.03%.
  • Swaps add counterparty and derivative exposure, and the prospectus notes there is no assurance CPI-U accurately measures the actual rate of inflation.sec.gov
  • The core can hold corporate and other non-Treasury bonds, so you carry credit risk a pure Treasury TIPS fund would not.sec.gov
  • STIP Short bonds accrue less inflation compensation than long-dated TIPS, and prices still move with real yields. This is a dampened hedge, not a pure one.
  • Distributions are irregular. Payouts ride the inflation adjustment, so income arrives lumpy rather than as a steady check.
  • Around 25 bonds, all at the front of the curve. SCHP spans the full TIPS maturity range for the same 0.03%.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
