JQUAAJPMorgan U.S. Quality Factor ETF

VUSEBVident U.S. Equity Strategy ETF

In short

JQUA Quality investing without the quality price tag. JQUA screens U.S. companies for profitability and strong balance-sheet traits, and charges 0.12%, the lowest fee in the quality-factor group we track.

VUSE A quality fund that starts in the boardroom: VUSE's index screens U.S. companies on corporate governance and accounting quality, then spreads weight across giant, large and small/mid caps instead of letting the biggest names run the show.

Stated mandate

JQUA JQUA is designed to provide domestic equity exposure focused on companies with strong quality and profitability characteristics, using a rules-based approach intended to enhance returns.

VUSE The Fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the total return of the Vident U.S. Quality Index. The index strategy selects U.S. equities using corporate-governance and accounting quality measures.

Why people hold it

  • JQUA 0.12% a year, against a roughly 0.29% median for quality-factor funds, and it undercuts the bigger badges QUAL and FQAL at 0.15%.
  • About 300 U.S. names selected on quality and profitability: a broad core-shaped sleeve, not a concentrated wager on a dozen balance sheets.
  • Live since 2017 and now a multi-billion-dollar, actively traded fund, so it has both a real track record and daily two-way flow.
  • One of the stronger implementations in its peer group: it stays close to the JP Morgan US Quality Factor Index it follows while keeping costs at the bottom of the group.
  • VUSE The governance angle. Most quality indexes rank profits and balance sheets; Vident's also scores management stewardship and accounting quality, then adjusts each holding's weight on that score.videntam.com
  • Not a closet index clone. Weight is deliberately spread across giant, large and small/mid-cap segments, so mid-sized companies get real representation.videntam.com
  • Live since 2014 with several hundred million dollars in assets: a decade-plus of real-world results, not a backtest. Income is paid out quarterly.
  • Does what the label says. A rules-based U.S. equity portfolio built to the governance-and-quality mandate written into its own prospectus, with no style drift hiding in the holdings.

Worth knowing

  • JQUA A quality screen is a tilt, not a shield. Owning profitable companies means owning less of everything else, and that gap cuts both ways.
  • Trades actively, though it is not the most heavily traded fund on the quality-factor shelf, which matters more for large orders than small ones.
  • Distributions land quarterly and fall out of what the screen owns. Income is a byproduct here, not the mandate.
  • VUSE At 0.50% a year it costs well above the quality-factor mainstays (JQUA 0.12%, QUAL and FQAL 0.15%) and above the group's typical fee. The governance layer has to earn that gap.
  • It trades thinly next to those peers, so bid-ask spreads can run wider, which matters most on larger orders.
  • The scoring is Vident's own, so holdings can look quite different from a standard quality index for long stretches. It sits in the lower half of its quality-factor peer group.

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
