FQALAFidelity Quality Factor ETF

VUSEBVident U.S. Equity Strategy ETF

In short

FQAL Fidelity's own quality screen, boxed into an ETF: roughly 130 U.S. companies picked for profitability, steady cash flow and clean balance sheets, at 0.15% a year, well under the typical fee in the quality-factor group.

VUSE A quality fund that starts in the boardroom: VUSE's index screens U.S. companies on corporate governance and accounting quality, then spreads weight across giant, large and small/mid caps instead of letting the biggest names run the show.

Stated mandate

FQAL The fund prioritizes U.S. companies exhibiting higher profitability, stable cash flows, and strong balance sheets.

VUSE The Fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the total return of the Vident U.S. Quality Index. The index strategy selects U.S. equities using corporate-governance and accounting quality measures.

Why people hold it

  • FQAL Costs 0.15% a year, roughly half the typical fee among quality-factor ETFs. That puts it in the cheapest tier of the group, alongside JQUA, VFQY and QUAL.
  • The rulebook is Fidelity's own: the Fidelity U.S. Quality Factor Index, tracked tightly. One of the closer index implementations in its peer group.
  • Live since 2016 and now a multi-billion-dollar fund, so this is a settled product rather than a launch still finding its footing.
  • The screen is explicit about what it wants: higher profitability, stable cash flows, strong balance sheets. No vague 'quality' hand-waving.
  • VUSE The governance angle. Most quality indexes rank profits and balance sheets; Vident's also scores management stewardship and accounting quality, then adjusts each holding's weight on that score.videntam.com
  • Not a closet index clone. Weight is deliberately spread across giant, large and small/mid-cap segments, so mid-sized companies get real representation.videntam.com
  • Live since 2014 with several hundred million dollars in assets: a decade-plus of real-world results, not a backtest. Income is paid out quarterly.
  • Does what the label says. A rules-based U.S. equity portfolio built to the governance-and-quality mandate written into its own prospectus, with no style drift hiding in the holdings.

Worth knowing

  • FQAL Roughly 130 stocks, not the whole market. A narrower bench means individual names and sector tilts carry more weight than in a total-market fund.
  • Trading volume is light next to the category's biggest quality funds, which can show up as wider bid-ask spreads.
  • Distributions come quarterly, but the screen hunts profitability and balance-sheet strength, not yield.
  • VUSE At 0.50% a year it costs well above the quality-factor mainstays (JQUA 0.12%, QUAL and FQAL 0.15%) and above the group's typical fee. The governance layer has to earn that gap.
  • It trades thinly next to those peers, so bid-ask spreads can run wider, which matters most on larger orders.
  • The scoring is Vident's own, so holdings can look quite different from a standard quality index for long stretches. It sits in the lower half of its quality-factor peer group.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
