MAVFFMatrix Advisors Value ETF

SEIVASEI QiM U.S. Large Cap Value Active ETF

In short

MAVF A 1996-vintage value strategy wearing an ETF ticker. Matrix picks US stocks by its own definition of cheap, aiming at appreciation and income both. Old-school active work in an aisle now ruled by rules-based screens.

SEIV Active quant value stock-picking at an index-fund price. SEIV screens U.S. large caps for cheap valuations plus quality, momentum and low volatility, then runs a concentrated book of roughly 80 names for 0.15% a year.

Stated mandate

MAVF The Fund seeks total return through capital appreciation and current income.

SEIV The Fund seeks long-term capital appreciation through primarily U.S. common stocks priced below fundamental valuation measures, using a quantitative, active stock-selection approach.

Why people hold it

  • MAVF Actual stock picking. The portfolio is built on Matrix's own definition of value, not an off-the-shelf index screen, and the fund says so in its prospectus.
  • The strategy dates to 1996, meaning it has run through the dot-com bust, 2008 and everything since. Track records that long are scarce in the value-ETF aisle.
  • Two jobs, stated plainly: capital appreciation and current income. Shareholders get distributions on a set annual or semiannual rhythm.
  • Simple plumbing. A standard 1940 Act US equity fund with no leverage or exotic wrapper mechanics to decode before you own it.
  • SEIV 0.15% a year for genuine active selection, against a 0.55% median in its U.S. value peer group. It matches the cheapest large-value quant funds rather than charging active prices.
  • Value is not the only screen. The model also weighs quality, momentum and low volatility, which is how a cheap-stock strategy tries to avoid the cheap-for-a-reason trap.
  • Other funds measured against the S&P 500 in this cohort charge far more (LSVD 0.40%, GSPY 0.50%, VNSE 1.34%). SEIV runs its version at 0.15%.
  • Sits among the strongest implementations in a crowded U.S. value field, and trades with enough regular activity to be workable for ordinary retail order sizes.

Worth knowing

  • MAVF The 0.75% expense ratio sits above the typical US value fund's 0.55%, and well above index-built peers like AVLV (0.15%) and WTV (0.12%). Active judgment is the thing you're paying for.
  • Small and thinly traded. Spreads can run wider than at the aisle's giants, and sizable orders can push the price around.
  • In a crowded field of 50-plus US value funds, our review lands it near the back, mostly on cost and trading friction rather than how it follows its mandate.
  • SEIV About 80 stocks measured against a 500-name benchmark. That concentration means stretches where it looks nothing like the S&P 500, in either direction.
  • Launched in 2022, so the live record is short, and the asset base is mid-sized rather than among the giants of the value aisle.
  • You get the factor recipe, not the trade-by-trade logic: selection sits inside a quantitative model. Distributions land quarterly, not monthly.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
