In short

MEDX Most healthcare funds chase drugmakers' profits. MEDX aims at the bill itself: pre-expense returns that generally track the U.S. healthcare cost inflation rate, held in a concentrated, actively run book.

TRUF Most active funds exist to beat a benchmark. TRUF is active so it can hug one: it holds US financials at true market weight, sidestepping the diversification caps that force many sector funds to shrink their largest names.

Stated mandate

MEDX The Fund seeks to provide long-term growth of capital.

TRUF The Fund is an actively managed ETF seeking long-term capital appreciation through securities of financials-related companies or instruments providing exposure to such companies.

Why people hold it

  • MEDX Unusual mandate: the fund seeks pre-expense returns that generally track the U.S. healthcare cost inflation rate, not the price of the healthcare sector.
  • Concentrated by design, roughly 30 positions. You can read the whole portfolio in a sitting instead of owning a sector index tail.
  • Actively managed by Horizon Kinetics since its 2023 launch, so the book is picked against the inflation goal rather than assembled by market cap.
  • TRUF A 0.10% expense ratio, against a 0.65% median for actively managed US equity funds in its peer group.
  • The hybrid build (individual stocks plus targeted ETFs) keeps a sector's biggest contributors at uncapped weight while staying inside fund diversification rules.businesswire.comvaneck.com
  • Roughly 80 names, measured against the MarketVector Top US Financials Companies Index. The mandate is the sector itself, not a stock picker's shortlist.

Worth knowing

  • MEDX At 0.85% a year, it costs more than the median active US equity fund (0.65%), and multiples of broad core rivals like DFAU (0.12%) and FELC (0.18%).
  • Small asset base and light trading volume. Spreads can widen, so limit orders do real work here.
  • Distributions arrive once or twice a year, and against hundreds of active US equity peers it sits in the bottom quartile on our overall review.
  • TRUF VanEck says financials has not suffered the weighting distortions that hit tech and consumer discretionary, so the problem this structure solves is smaller here.vaneck.com
  • Launched in 2026 and still a small fund, so spreads can run wider than in the sector's household-name ETFs. Limit orders are the usual tool for that.
  • Owning other ETFs brings acquired fund fees, one of the items VanEck's expense arrangement does not cover, so total cost sits above the headline fee.vaneck.com

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
