OCTHFInnovator Premium Income 20 Barrier ETF

PSFDBPacer Swan SOS Flex (January) ETF

In short

OCTH Not a buffer fund, a barrier fund. Income is manufactured from Treasury interest and S&P 500 option premiums, the first 20% of index losses are absorbed, and past that line you take the full drop from the starting level.

PSFD Absorbs the first 20% of a drop in the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust over each 12-month period, with your upside capped in exchange. One of the original 2020 Pacer/Swan buffer funds, and priced under most deep-buffer rivals.

Stated mandate

OCTH The fund seeks one-year returns centered on a defined distribution rate, with protection from S&P 500 Price Return Index losses up to a 20% barrier and losses thereafter, including one-to-one exposure after the threshold. Income comes from Treasury interest and FLEX-option premiums.

PSFD The fund seeks to match the returns of the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust up to a stated cap while mitigating specified downside losses through a structured buffer strategy over an approximately one-year period.

Why people hold it

  • OCTH The 20% barrier is written into the fund's documents, not estimated: index losses at or below it at the end of the one-year period don't reach shareholders.sec.gov
  • Income is built from Treasury interest and S&P 500 FLEX option premiums, so there is no corporate credit risk and limited interest-rate exposure.globenewswire.cominnovatoretfs.com
  • The distribution rate is published before each one-year outcome period begins, so the terms and the target payout are known going in. Cash goes out quarterly.sec.gov
  • Innovator launched this structure in 2023 and runs versions starting in different months, making the October series one rung of a year-round ladder.globenewswire.cominnovatoretfs.com
  • PSFD 0.49% a year versus a 0.74% median for 20%-buffer S&P 500 funds, undercutting the AllianzIM month-series lineup (JANW, APRW, JUNW). When upside is capped, fees come straight out of the ceiling.
  • Deep cushion, clean reset: FLEX options are structured to absorb the first 20% of underlying losses over the roughly one-year period, with a new cap struck at the start of each period.paceretfs.com
  • Siblings run the same recipe on other calendars (PSFM in April, PSFJ in July), so start dates can be staggered instead of pinned to one January strike. Standing sits in the upper half of the deep-buffer group.

Worth knowing

  • OCTH Barrier, not buffer: if the index closes the period more than 20% below its start, the fund absorbs the entire decline from day one, not just the slice past 20%.sec.govinnovatoretfs.com
  • The rate is a ceiling. Filings call it the maximum return for the period, so index gains beyond it don't accrue, and payouts can include return of capital.sec.gov
  • At 0.79% it runs above the 0.60% cohort median, with cheaper S&P 500 income options around (IVVW at 0.25%, GPIX at 0.35%). It is also small and thinly traded.
  • PSFD Thinly traded. Spreads can be wider and larger orders harder to fill than in the giants of the buffer aisle.
  • No income stream: the fund holds options on an S&P 500 tracker rather than the stocks, and it has not paid a distribution.paceretfs.com
  • Buffer and cap run start to finish of the period and are set before fees and expenses. Shares bought mid-period carry different remaining cushion and headroom.paceretfs.com
