PBJDInvesco Food & Beverage ETF

VDCBVanguard Consumer Staples ETF

In short

PBJ The thematic purist of consumer staples: about 30 US food and drink stocks, picked by a quant screen rather than market cap. No cigarettes, no shampoo aisle, just what ends up on the table.

VDC Vanguard's take on the boring-on-purpose sector: about 100 US large-, mid- and small-cap staples names (soap, soda, groceries) for 0.09% a year, running since 2004.

Stated mandate

PBJ The Fund seeks capital appreciation by investing in companies selected through the Dynamic Food & Beverage IntellidexSM Index methodology.

VDC The fund seeks to track the MSCI US Investable Market Consumer Staples 25/50 Index, which measures the performance of large-, mid-, and small-cap U.S. consumer staples stocks.

Why people hold it

  • PBJ Food and drink only. The index holds about 30 US food and beverage companies, so tobacco and household-products giants never crowd out the theme.invesco.com
  • Names earn their spot on price momentum, earnings momentum, quality, management action and value, and the lineup is rebalanced and reconstituted quarterly.invesco.com
  • Trading since 2005, making it one of the longest-running funds aimed squarely at the food and beverage aisle. Distributions land quarterly.
  • VDC Charges 0.09% a year. Only XLP and FSTA sit lower at 0.08%, while the equal-weight and global alternatives (RSPS, KXI) run 0.38% to 0.40%.
  • Its index spans large-, mid- and small-cap US staples, roughly 100 stocks, so mid-sized beverage and household-products makers count, not just the mega-cap handful.
  • Hugs its MSCI benchmark tightly, one of the closer index implementations among broad consumer staples funds.
  • A multi-billion-dollar fund that has been trading since 2004 and pays out quarterly.

Worth knowing

  • PBJ At 0.63% (0.64% gross, net of a waiver through August 31, 2028), it costs more than the typical staples fund, and well above cap-weighted XLP at 0.08% or VDC at 0.09%.
  • Thinly traded and a smaller fund, so the spread you pay getting in and out can matter as much as the fee.
  • Quarterly reconstitution keeps the roster moving. About 30 holdings means single stocks carry real weight, and the lineup can look different a year from now.invesco.com
  • VDC One sector, one story. Staples move with grocery aisles and household budgets, not the broad market.
  • Even with the index's 25/50 diversification caps, a few giant food, beverage and retail names carry most of the weight.
  • Moderately traded rather than the category's volume leader, so limit orders earn their keep on larger trades.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
