Our read on IYK
BA 2000-vintage sector fund covering the staples aisle: about 50 U.S. food, drink and household-goods makers, held in a capped index built so no single giant runs the whole show.
The fund seeks to track an index of U.S. equities in the consumer staples sector, providing diversified exposure to U.S. food, beverage, and household-goods producers.
Why people hold it
- Running since 2000, it is one of the original U.S. sector ETFs, now a multi-billion-dollar fund that pays quarterly.
- The index it tracks (Russell 1000 Consumer Staples RIC 22.5/45 Capped) applies weight caps, so one mega-cap staple cannot swamp the portfolio.ishares.com
- About 50 holdings of U.S. food, beverage and household-goods producers: groceries, detergent, toothpaste, the stuff carts fill with in any weather.
- Fees come in under the typical fund in this group, and it sits in the upper half of the consumer staples field overall.
Worth knowing
- Price is the trade-off: 0.38% a year, while XLP, VDC and FSTA walk the same aisle for under a tenth of a percent.
- Concentrated by design. One sector, roughly 50 names, and nothing from tech, energy or financials to offset a bad stretch for staples.
- U.S. shelves only. The Nestle and Unilever side of the world sits in its sibling fund KXI, not here.
