PCFI—Polen Floating Rate Income ETF

SPHYAState Street SPDR Portfolio High Yield Bond ETF

In short

PCFI Most high-yield ETFs buy fixed-coupon junk bonds. PCFI buys senior secured bank loans whose coupons reset with short-term rates, hand-picked from middle-market borrowers by an active credit team.

SPHY State Street's junk-bond workhorse: roughly 1,900 US high yield bonds in one wrapper for 0.05% a year, a fraction of what the typical high yield ETF charges, with income paid monthly.

Stated mandate

PCFI The Fund seeks total return through high current income and long-term capital appreciation, primarily by investing in fixed- and floating-rate high-yield fixed-income securities.

SPHY The fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the ICE BofA US High Yield Index.

Why people hold it

  • PCFI Floating-rate loan coupons reset with short-term rates, so the portfolio carries much less interest-rate sensitivity than a fixed-coupon high-yield bond fund.polencapital.compolencapital.com 2
  • Policy puts at least 80% of assets in floating-rate obligations and bank loans, largely first and second lien senior secured paper near the top of the capital structure.polencapital.com
  • Fishes in middle-market credit (issuers with roughly $75M to $250M of EBITDA) in the US and, to a lesser extent, Canada, a corner broad index funds largely skip.polencapital.com
  • Actively managed rather than index-tracking, and it pays income monthly.polencapital.com
  • SPHY 0.05% a year against a peer-group median about eight times higher. In high yield, the fee comes straight out of coupon income, so the gap does real work.
  • Holds about 1,900 bonds tracking the ICE BofA US High Yield Index, broad enough that no single issuer's trouble dominates the portfolio.ssga.com
  • Live since 2012, a multi-billion-dollar fund that trades actively and has stuck tightly to its stated index rather than drifting from the mandate.
  • Distributions arrive monthly, in step with how the underlying coupons come in.

Worth knowing

  • PCFI 0.49% a year is active-manager pricing. Index-based high-yield options such as SCYB (0.03%) and HYLB (0.05%) cost a small fraction of that.
  • Launched in 2025 with a small asset base and light trading, so bid/ask spreads can run wider than in the category's household-name funds.
  • Bank loans sit below investment grade (much of the leveraged loan market is rated B and below), so credit and liquidity risk ride along with the income.polencapital.com
  • SPHY This is below-investment-grade credit. Defaults and spread moves drive the price far more than Treasury yields do, and sell-offs in this asset class can be sharp.
  • Fees here are already near the floor: SCYB lists 0.03% and HYLB matches at 0.05%, so the cost edge over the strongest peers is narrow.
  • Scope is US high yield corporates, full stop. No investment-grade ballast, no emerging market debt, nothing to soften a credit drawdown from inside the fund.ssga.com

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
