PJPBInvesco Pharmaceuticals ETF

PPHAVanEck Pharmaceutical ETF

In short

PJP Most pharma ETFs simply own the sector's biggest names. PJP runs a rules-based screen for momentum, quality and value across US drugmakers and holds only the roughly 30 that clear it, for 0.58% a year.

PPH About two dozen US-listed drugmakers in one ticker, tracking the MVIS US Listed Pharmaceutical 25 Index since 2011. VanEck charges well under the pharma-fund median to run it.

Stated mandate

PJP The fund seeks capital appreciation by investing primarily in pharmaceutical companies selected through the Dynamic Pharmaceutical Intellidex Index.

PPH The fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the performance of the MVIS US Listed Pharmaceutical 25 Index, which covers companies involved in pharmaceutical research and development, production, marketing, and sales.

Why people hold it

  • PJP The Dynamic Pharmaceutical Intellidex screen ranks US drugmakers on momentum, quality and value, so holdings are selected by the numbers rather than by size alone.invesco.com
  • Trading since 2005, PJP has run this screen through two decades of patent cliffs, drug-pricing fights and FDA cycles.invesco.com
  • A tight book of roughly 30 stocks means the screen's picks carry real weight instead of being diluted across a sprawling sector list. Income arrives quarterly.
  • PPH Costs 0.36% a year against a 0.57% median for pharma ETFs, undercutting peers like PJP and FTXH.
  • Focused by design: the index tracks US-listed pharmaceutical companies (research, production, marketing, sales) rather than the whole health care aisle.vaneck.com
  • Trading since 2011, one of the veterans of the pharma shelf, and it sits in the top quartile of its peer group on our review.
  • Pays out quarterly, and it is a moderately traded fund, so getting in and out is usually straightforward.

Worth knowing

  • PJP At 0.58% a year the fee sits near the pharma category median, but plain cap-weighted rivals undercut it: XPH at 0.35%, PPH at 0.36%, IHE at 0.37%.
  • It trades lighter than the category's heavyweights, so spreads can widen and limit orders matter more here.
  • Roughly 30 names in one industry: a single trial readout or patent loss lands harder than it would in a broad healthcare fund.
  • PPH Around 26 holdings. One company's trial result or patent cliff carries real weight in a basket this tight.
  • Single-sector health care exposure: drug pricing politics and regulation land on the whole basket at once, with nothing else to cushion it.
  • The fee edge over the category is real, but XPH sits at 0.35%, so cost alone is not what separates these two.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
