SPHYAState Street SPDR Portfolio High Yield Bond ETF

VSHYBVirtus Newfleet Short Duration High Yield Bond ETF

In short

SPHY State Street's junk-bond workhorse: roughly 1,900 US high yield bonds in one wrapper for 0.05% a year, a fraction of what the typical high yield ETF charges, with income paid monthly.

VSHY Junk bonds without the long fuse. VSHY runs an active high yield portfolio with duration held to one to three years, so rate swings land lighter than on full-length index rivals.

Stated mandate

SPHY The fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the ICE BofA US High Yield Index.

VSHY The Fund seeks a high level of current income and, secondarily, capital appreciation.

Why people hold it

  • SPHY 0.05% a year against a peer-group median about eight times higher. In high yield, the fee comes straight out of coupon income, so the gap does real work.
  • Holds about 1,900 bonds tracking the ICE BofA US High Yield Index, broad enough that no single issuer's trouble dominates the portfolio.ssga.com
  • Live since 2012, a multi-billion-dollar fund that trades actively and has stuck tightly to its stated index rather than drifting from the mandate.
  • Distributions arrive monthly, in step with how the underlying coupons come in.
  • VSHY The mandate is the point: managers target a one to three year duration, taking high yield credit risk without full-length interest rate exposure.virtus.com
  • Actively run, not index-bound. Newfleet's team buys on relative value and can add floating rate bank loans instead of owning whatever an index dictates.virtus.com
  • A 0.39% fee sits near the middle of the high yield ETF pack, unusual for active bond management.
  • Pays monthly, spreads credit across roughly 200 positions, and has been trading since 2016.

Worth knowing

  • SPHY This is below-investment-grade credit. Defaults and spread moves drive the price far more than Treasury yields do, and sell-offs in this asset class can be sharp.
  • Fees here are already near the floor: SCYB lists 0.03% and HYLB matches at 0.05%, so the cost edge over the strongest peers is narrow.
  • Scope is US high yield corporates, full stop. No investment-grade ballast, no emerging market debt, nothing to soften a credit drawdown from inside the fund.ssga.com
  • VSHY Small fund, thin volume. The bid-ask spread can matter more to your cost here than the expense ratio does.
  • Index giants cost far less: SCYB, SPHY and USHY all charge under a tenth of a percent for broad high yield.
  • Short duration softens rate moves, not default risk. These are below-investment-grade bonds, and the fund may reach into emerging markets and bank loans.virtus.com

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
