TIPDCNorthern Trust 2055 Inflation-Linked Distributing Ladder ETF

VTIPAVanguard Short-Term Inflation-Protected Securities ETF

In short

TIPD A TIPS ladder with a 2055 finish line. TIPD holds inflation-protected Treasuries and pays out income and principal along the way, so the payments are linked to inflation rather than a fixed coupon.

VTIP Inflation protection without the long-bond whiplash. VTIP holds only Treasury TIPS maturing inside five years, so CPI does most of the driving and rate swings do less of it, for three basis points a year.

Stated mandate

TIPD The Fund seeks periodic inflation-linked distributions through U.S. Treasury Inflation Protected Securities, providing income and/or principal through 2055.

VTIP Tracks a benchmark measuring the investment return of U.S. Treasury inflation-protected public obligations with remaining maturities under five years.

Why people hold it

  • TIPD A target-maturity fund built on inflation-protected Treasuries, not corporate bonds: distributions are inflation-linked, and the ladder is designed to pay down through 2055.flexshares.com
  • 0.10% a year, in line with what target-maturity bond ETFs typically charge, and the underlying paper is US Treasury issued, so there is no corporate credit to underwrite.
  • One ticker replaces the chore of buying and rolling a couple dozen individual TIPS: Northern Trust's FlexShares runs the ladder inside a standard 1940 Act ETF.
  • VTIP Three basis points a year, against a 0.12% median for Treasury bond ETFs in its group. Vanguard's at-cost setup shows up right in the fee line.vanguard.com
  • TIPS principal ratchets with CPI, and the under-five-year maturity cap keeps duration short, so rate moves land lighter here than in full-curve TIPS funds like SCHP.vanguard.com
  • Open since 2012 and now a multi-billion-dollar, actively traded fund that owns Treasury paper directly. Plain index rules, no swaps, no credit detours.

Worth knowing

  • TIPD Payments are periodic rather than clockwork, and the fund discloses they can include return of principal. Treat the cash flow as a drawdown, not a level coupon.flexshares.com
  • Launched in 2025 and still small and lightly traded, so bid-ask spreads can run wider than in the long-established bullet-bond ladders.
  • A 2055 horizon means decades of duration. Real-yield swings can move the share price sharply long before the ladder finishes paying out.
  • VTIP Short maturities cut both ways: less sensitivity to rates, and less exposure to shifts in long-run inflation expectations than a full-maturity TIPS fund such as SCHP.
  • Income rides on CPI accruals, so the quarterly payout moves around rather than arriving as a steady coupon.
  • This is one narrow slice of one market, short US Treasury TIPS, not a diversified bond portfolio.
