Our read on BSV
AThe short end of Vanguard's bond lineup: investment-grade US government and corporate paper capped at one to five years, for three basis points a year. Same indexing discipline as its total-market sibling, with far less rate whiplash.
The fund seeks to track a market-weighted bond index with a short-term dollar-weighted average maturity.
Why people hold it
- Three basis points a year, against a category median around 0.36%. One of the cheapest tickets into the short end of the investment-grade bond market.
- Every bond in the index matures within one to five years, which mechanically dampens how much the price moves when rates do, compared with longer-maturity bond funds.advisors.vanguard.com
- Broad by design: US Treasuries, investment-grade corporates and dollar-denominated international issues, all float-adjusted and market-weighted rather than hand-picked.advisors.vanguard.com
- Trading since 2007, a fund with tens of billions in assets and one of the busier tapes in its category. Income is paid out monthly.
Worth knowing
- A bond fund, not a savings account. The share price moves with rates and credit spreads, and short-term bond funds can and do post losing stretches.advisors.vanguard.com
- Not Treasuries only. Investment-grade corporate and dollar-denominated international bonds ride along, so a slice of credit risk comes with the ladder.advisors.vanguard.com
- One slice of the bond market, not the whole thing: nothing maturing past five years is in the index.advisors.vanguard.com

How it’s calculated: standard deviation
The sample standard deviation of monthly total returns, multiplied by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Total returns include reinvested distributions.

How it’s calculated: Sharpe ratio
Subtract each month’s Treasury-bill return from the fund’s monthly total return.
Divide the average of those excess returns by their sample standard deviation, then multiply by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Each month uses the Treasury yield quoted at the end of the previous month.
- −8.2%
How it’s calculated: maximum drawdown
The largest percentage decline from an earlier peak, using total returns with reinvested distributions.
Uses up to five years through the last close, with at least 12 months required.
- 0.38
