CBONDVanEck China Bond ETF

EMLCAVanEck J.P. Morgan EM Local Currency Bond ETF

In short

CBON The first US-listed ETF to open China's onshore bond market to American buyers, back in 2014. One country, one currency, a few dozen RMB bonds from government, policy-bank and credit issuers.

EMLC Emerging-market governments borrowing in their own money, not dollars. EMLC has run that trade since 2010, holding roughly 500 local-currency sovereign bonds and paying monthly. You own the yields and the currencies, unhedged.

Stated mandate

CBON The fund seeks to replicate the price and yield performance of the FTSE Chinese Broad Bond 0–10 Diversified Select Index before fees and expenses. The index covers fixed-rate, RMB-denominated bonds issued in China by credit, governmental, and quasi-governmental issuers.

EMLC The fund seeks to track the J.P. Morgan GBI-EM Global Core Index, which represents local-currency bonds issued by emerging-market governments.

Why people hold it

  • CBON Launched in 2014 as the first US-listed ETF for China's onshore bonds, a market long walled off from foreign investors. Still a rare single-country way in.vaneck.com
  • The index blends government, policy-bank and credit issuers and caps maturities at 10 years, so it is a short-to-intermediate onshore slice, not a pure sovereign play.vaneck.com
  • Costs 0.50% a year, a shade under the typical fee in its emerging-market local-currency bond peer group, and it pays income monthly.
  • EMLC Costs 0.30% a year against a 0.40% median for its bond peer group. In a corner of the market where access is usually the expensive part, that gap matters.
  • A multi-billion-dollar, actively traded fund and one of the longest-running US-listed routes into local-currency emerging-market government debt (launched 2010).
  • Holds roughly 500 government bonds, and the J.P. Morgan GBI-EM index family caps how much weight any single country can carry.jpmorgan.com
  • Pays monthly, so income arrives on a steady rhythm rather than in quarterly lumps.

Worth knowing

  • CBON Holdings are RMB-denominated, so the dollar value moves with the yuan as well as with Chinese rates.vaneck.com
  • Small and thinly traded next to giant EM local-debt peers like EMLC and LEMB, which can mean wider spreads and more work getting a fill.
  • A few dozen bonds, one country, one central bank. Diversification here comes from issuer type, not from geography.
  • EMLC No currency hedge. Results ride emerging-market currencies against the dollar, which cuts both ways and can move more than the bonds themselves.vaneck.com
  • Emerging-market sovereign debt brings credit, political and country risk, and local bond markets can thin out when sentiment turns.vaneck.com
  • Cheap for this niche, not cheap for bonds generally: plain-vanilla peers like AGZ (0.15%) charge half as much for far simpler exposure.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
