Our read on EMHY
BMost high-yield ETFs buy American junk bonds. EMHY crosses borders instead: dollar-denominated high yield from emerging-market governments and companies, in one index-tracking, monthly-paying wrapper iShares has run since 2012.
The fund seeks to track an index of U.S.-dollar-denominated high-yield bonds issued by emerging-market sovereigns and corporations, providing exposure to emerging-market debt.
Why people hold it
- Two credit worlds in one ticker. The index blends EM sovereign and corporate high yield, spread across roughly 700 bonds, so no single government or borrower drives the fund.ishares.com
- Everything inside is priced in US dollars. You take emerging-market credit risk without layering on the currency swings of local-currency debt.ishares.com
- Running since 2012 and paying monthly, it has carried this mandate through multiple emerging-market stress cycles rather than launching into a fashionable one.
Worth knowing
- Specialist exposure carries a specialist price: 0.50% a year, against 0.03% for SCYB and 0.05% for SPHY on plain US high-yield beta. Different job, different bill.
- Junk credit risk plus country risk. EM sovereign and corporate bonds bring politics, reserves and restructuring into a portfolio already sitting below investment grade.
- A mid-size fund with moderate volume, not one of the category's traffic leaders. Bid-ask spreads on EM bonds tend to widen exactly when credit markets get noisy.
