Our read on ESG
BPlenty of ESG funds hand you the S&P 500 with a few names shaved off. This one narrows to about 300 US companies chosen on ESG key performance indicators, tracked passively since 2016.
The fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the STOXX USA ESG Select KPIs Index. It uses a passive representative-sampling approach to invest in U.S. equities selected using ESG criteria.
Why people hold it
- Genuinely selective: roughly 300 US names screened on ESG key performance indicators, not the full large-cap index with a handful of names trimmed out.flexshares.com
- Straight index execution: passive representative sampling of one named STOXX index, no manager discretion. What the label promises is what the portfolio holds.
- Live since 2016, so it has a longer real-world record than much of the ESG shelf, and it pays out quarterly.
Worth knowing
- At 0.33% a year, it costs more than the cheapest index-based ESG peers, including XVV at 0.08% and ESGV at 0.09%.
- A modest asset base and light trading mean bid-ask spreads can run wider than at the giants of the category.
- A roughly 300-stock portfolio is a narrower slice than S&P 500-based ESG funds, so it can drift from the broad market in either direction.
