Our read on EUFN
CEuropean banks, insurers and asset managers in one US-listed ticket. Roughly 80 stocks spanning 15 developed European markets, from Spanish lenders to Swiss and British giants, and it has been doing that one job since 2010.
The fund seeks to track an index of developed-market European equities in the financials sector, providing regional sector exposure to European banks, insurers, and financial-services firms.
Why people hold it
- Whole-continent reach, not just the euro zone: the index covers financials across 15 developed European countries, including the UK, Switzerland and the Nordics.msci.com
- One clean instrument for a regional sector view: about 80 banks, insurers and financial-services firms, per the fund's stated objective.ishares.com
- Assets in the billions and active daily trading, which is unusual for a single-sector, single-region fund.
- Running since January 2010, through the euro-zone debt crisis and the negative-rate years. Long tenure for a niche slice of the market.
Worth knowing
- Costs 0.49% a year, above the 0.44% median for financials funds and far above US-focused index rivals like XLF (0.08%) and VFH (0.09%). International plumbing isn't cheap.
- The holdings trade in euros, pounds, francs and krona, so exchange-rate moves ride along with the stock story in your dollar returns.msci.com
- One sector, market-cap weighted, so Europe's largest banks and insurers carry the load. Rate moves and credit cycles drive it more than any single company.money.usnews.com
