Our read on EWV
DShorting Tokyo, doubled. EWV targets two times the inverse of the MSCI Japan Index's daily move, resetting every day, and it has been doing that job since 2007.
The fund seeks daily investment results, before fees and expenses, equal to two times the inverse (-2x) of the daily performance of the MSCI Japan Index.
Why people hold it
- One ticket for a -2x Japan equity view: no margin account, no futures to roll. The stated objective is twice the inverse of the MSCI Japan Index, daily.proshares.com
- Live since 2007, a long run for a niche inverse fund, with the index, multiple and daily reset spelled out in ProShares' own materials.proshares.com
- Exposure is bounded by the shares you own, unlike an outright short sale, and the -2x objective is reset to target each day.
Worth knowing
- The fee is 2.51% a year, roughly double the typical leveraged or inverse fund, so time in the position costs real money.
- Daily reset: hold past a day and compounding takes over, so multi-day results can diverge widely from -2x the index's move over the same stretch.
- Small and lightly traded next to ProShares' headline inverse products like PSQ, so spreads and order size deserve attention.

EWV Risk
This fund targets a multiple of the daily move of its index and resets daily. Hold it longer than one reset and compounding makes the return diverge from that target. In choppy markets it can lose value even when the index ends flat.
- 24.9%
How it’s calculated: standard deviation
The sample standard deviation of monthly total returns, multiplied by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Total returns include reinvested distributions.
- −1.50
How it’s calculated: Sharpe ratio
Subtract each month’s Treasury-bill return from the fund’s monthly total return.
Divide the average of those excess returns by their sample standard deviation, then multiply by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Each month uses the Treasury yield quoted at the end of the previous month.
- −80.5%
How it’s calculated: maximum drawdown
The largest percentage decline from an earlier peak, using total returns with reinvested distributions.
Uses up to five years through the last close, with at least 12 months required.
- −1.22
How it’s calculated: beta
The beta figure is supplied by FMP. The comparison index depends on the fund’s broad asset class.
