Our read on FFND
DAn active global stock picker that isn't locked into being long-only: the prospectus allows short positions to hedge or to pursue returns in declining markets. The trade-off is a 1.61% fee, roughly double its peer group's median.
The Fund seeks capital appreciation through active investing. Its strategy may include short positions in equity securities for hedging or to pursue returns in declining markets.
Why people hold it
- Go-anywhere mandate: capital appreciation through active investing, with short positions permitted for hedging or to pursue returns when markets fall.
- Roughly 90 positions. Concentrated enough that the manager's picks actually move the fund, rather than getting diluted into something index-shaped.
- The portfolio itself is the sturdiest part of the package, and the fund lands in the upper half of its global growth conviction peer group.
- Trading since 2021, so there is a multi-year live record to judge, not a backtest.
Worth knowing
- Cost is the headline trade-off: 1.61% a year against a 0.85% peer median, and more than triple CGGO's 0.47%. Stock picking has to earn that gap annually.
- Small fund, thin trading. Spreads deserve a look and limit orders matter more here than on a mega-cap index ETF.
- Income isn't the design. Distributions land once or twice a year at most; the stated goal is capital appreciation.
