Our read on MAGA

ETF.net Research

DThe mirror image of an ESG fund. MAGA screens the Solactive U.S. 500 for companies that support Republican federal candidates, then equal-weights the survivors. A political conviction turned into a rules-based index, running since 2017.

Stated mandate

The Fund seeks to track the price and yield performance, before fees and expenses, of the Point Bridge America First Index. The index is an equal-weight custom portfolio drawn from the Solactive U.S. 500 Index and screened for support of Republican federal candidates.

Why people hold it

  1. 01The rule is written down: start with the Solactive U.S. 500, keep the names screened for support of Republican federal candidates. A values screen you can audit, not a vibe.
  2. 02Equal weight across roughly 140 stocks, so a mid-size industrial gets the same slot as a trillion-dollar tech giant.
  3. 03Live since 2017, it has carried the same mandate through multiple election cycles rather than rewriting itself with the news.

Worth knowing

  1. 01Conviction costs: 0.72% a year, while broad screened-index peers such as ESGV and SNPE charge a fraction of that.
  2. 02A small, thinly traded fund. Spreads can be wide and size can push the price, so how you place the order matters more here than in a mega-cap index fund.
  3. 03The screen is political, not financial. Sector mix, and results, can sit a long way from the plain US large-cap index in either direction.
