Our read on MOTO
DThe stock-picker's take on the EV trade. Most autonomous-and-electric funds just follow a rulebook; MOTO's manager hand-builds a global book of roughly 70 names spanning vehicles, chips and the networks that tie them together. Trading since 2019.
The fund seeks long-term capital appreciation by investing primarily in publicly traded equity securities of domestic or foreign companies developing or producing smart-transportation products and systems, including autonomous or electric vehicles and smart transportation networks. It is actively managed and normally invests at least 80% of net assets in these companies.
Why people hold it
- Active by design: a manager chooses the names rather than tracking a benchmark, so suppliers, chipmakers and network builders get in on judgment, not index rules.
- Roughly 70 global holdings spread the theme across autonomous driving, electric vehicles and the smart-transportation networks behind them.
- The mandate commits at least 80% of assets to smart-transportation companies, so the theme stays the portfolio rather than a garnish on a broad tech fund.
- Trading since 2019, which gives it a multi-year record instead of a launch-window story.
Worth knowing
- At 1.21% a year, it is one of the pricier ways to own this theme. Index-based rivals such as DRIV, IDRV and FDRV charge a fraction of that.
- Small fund, thin trading. Spreads and premiums or discounts can run wider than on the big index names in the group.
- No index to fall back on. Outcomes ride on the manager's calls about which corner of the theme matters, not a published rulebook.
