Our read on QLD
AThe dialed-back Nasdaq leverage trade. QLD aims for twice the Nasdaq-100's daily move rather than three times, and it has been running that playbook since 2006, back when leveraged ETFs were a brand-new idea.
The fund seeks daily investment results, before fees and expenses, equal to twice the daily performance of the Nasdaq-100 Index.
Why people hold it
- Targets 2x the Nasdaq-100's daily return, so you get real amplification with half the daily swing of the 3x version, TQQQ.proshares.com
- Trading since 2006 and it has stayed close to its stated daily 2x target, one of the tighter implementations in the leveraged group.
- A multi-billion-dollar fund and one of the more actively traded leveraged ETFs, which generally shows up as tight spreads for the people using it.
- Fee of 0.98% a year, a shade under the median for leveraged funds.
Worth knowing
- The 2x target resets every day. Hold longer and compounding can pull results away from twice the index's move over that stretch, especially in choppy markets.proshares.com
- The Nasdaq-100 is roughly 100 names dominated by big tech. Leverage magnifies that concentration in both directions.
- At 0.98%, the fee sits far above a plain index fund, and the swaps that manufacture the leverage carry their own embedded costs.proshares.com

QLD Risk
This fund targets a multiple of the daily move of its index and resets daily. Hold it longer than one reset and compounding makes the return diverge from that target. In choppy markets it can lose value even when the index ends flat.
- 36.5%
How it’s calculated: standard deviation
The sample standard deviation of monthly total returns, multiplied by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Total returns include reinvested distributions.
- 0.98
How it’s calculated: Sharpe ratio
Subtract each month’s Treasury-bill return from the fund’s monthly total return.
Divide the average of those excess returns by their sample standard deviation, then multiply by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Each month uses the Treasury yield quoted at the end of the previous month.
- −63.7%
How it’s calculated: maximum drawdown
The largest percentage decline from an earlier peak, using total returns with reinvested distributions.
Uses up to five years through the last close, with at least 12 months required.
- 2.47
How it’s calculated: beta
The beta figure is supplied by FMP. The comparison index depends on the fund’s broad asset class.
