Our read on TDSC
AMost defensive equity funds screen for low-volatility stocks and hope for the best. TDSC works from the other end: a drawdown target written into its name, with an active manager steering the portfolio toward that downside-risk parameter.
The Fund seeks long-term growth while managing its portfolio toward a specified drawdown, or targeted downside-risk, parameter.
Why people hold it
- The risk budget is the mandate. Cabana actively manages the portfolio toward a specified drawdown parameter, the number in the fund's name, instead of tracking an index.
- Running since 2020, so the drawdown-targeting approach has a live record through several very different markets, not just a backtest.
- Simple plumbing underneath: a standard 1940 Act US equity ETF with no leverage or exotic structure, and it distributes quarterly.
Worth knowing
- "Target" means aim, not promise. The drawdown parameter guides how the portfolio is managed; it does not cap losses the way a defined-outcome buffer does.
- At 0.90% a year, the fee sits well above the typical low-volatility defensive peer. SELV (0.15%) and CGCV (0.33%) charge a fraction of it.
- Thinly traded next to the bigger names in the category, so spreads can be wider and limit orders matter more.
