Our read on XJR
BXJR lays a light ESG screen over the S&P SmallCap 600, an index that only admits companies with positive earnings. Tobacco, thermal coal, oil sands and weapons get struck out; the rest of the small-cap field stays.
The fund seeks to track small-capitalization U.S. equities through an index that applies environmental, social, and governance screens for controversies and controversial business activities.
Why people hold it
- Costs 0.12% a year, roughly a quarter of the median fee among the index-tracking funds it competes with.
- The parent S&P SmallCap 600 admits only companies with positive earnings in the latest quarter and the trailing four, so unprofitable small caps never make the list.spglobal.com
- Exclusions are spelled out: controversial weapons, small arms, tobacco, oil sands and shale, thermal coal, fossil fuel reserves. You can check what got left out.ishares.com
Worth knowing
- A smaller fund that trades lightly. Spreads can widen, so limit orders do real work here.
- The screen removes offenders rather than ranking companies on sustainability. A firm clears by avoiding the listed businesses and serious controversies.ishares.com
- Small caps swing harder than large caps in both directions, and the earnings rule softens that without erasing it.spglobal.com
