Our read on XLFI
BHolds State Street's big financials sector fund, sells call options on it, and pays the premiums out monthly. A 2025 launch that turns banks, insurers and capital-markets firms into cash flow, trading away some upside.
The fund uses an actively managed strategy intended to provide current income while preserving prospects for long-term capital growth. It invests in the Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF and sells call options on that ETF to generate additional income.
Why people hold it
- Plumbing is refreshingly literal: own one sector ETF (XLF), write calls on that same ETF, distribute monthly. No basket of single-name options to unpick.ssga.com
- 0.35% a year, dead center for sector covered-call funds and identical to every sibling (XLVI, XLUI, XLEI). Choosing among them is a sector decision, not a fee one.
- The portfolio matches the mandate on the tin, and the fund sits in the upper half of its sector income-overlay peer group.
Worth knowing
- Written calls cap how much of a financials rally reaches shareholders. Sideways markets suit the mechanics; a sector melt-up is where it costs.ssga.com
- One sector carries the whole load: banks, insurers, capital markets and mortgage REITs all ride the same rate and credit cycle.ssga.com
- Launched in 2025, so the live record is short, and it trades lighter than the sector fund it holds. Limit orders earn their keep.
