Our read on XVV
ASubtraction, not reinvention. XVV holds a cap-weighted slice of the S&P 500 with controversial weapons, tobacco, thermal coal and similar business lines screened out, for eight basis points a year.
The Fund seeks to track an index of large-capitalization U.S. equities while excluding companies involved in specified controversies and controversial business activities.
Why people hold it
- Charges 0.08% a year, roughly a third of the typical ESG cohort fee and below screened-index rivals SNPE, ESGV and EFIV.
- The screens are rules, not opinions: controversial weapons, small arms, tobacco, oil sands and shale, thermal coal and fossil fuel reserves, applied on revenue thresholds.ishares.com
- Keeps roughly 400 large-cap names, cap-weighted, so the portfolio still looks like the US market's core rather than a boutique basket.ishares.com
- Does what the label says: it follows its screened S&P 500 index tightly, and stands in the top quartile of its values-screened peer group.
Worth knowing
- One of the quieter tickers in its group. Thin trading means spreads and order size matter more here than with the household-name ESG funds.
- Exclusion is the whole method. Companies that clear the screens are not picked for good ESG behavior, and iShares notes holdings may not show favorable ESG traits.ishares.com
- Cutting about 100 S&P 500 members shifts sector weights, so results can drift from the unscreened index in either direction.
