In short

AGG Launched in 2003, one of the first funds to pack the entire U.S. investment-grade bond market into a single ticker: Treasuries, corporates and mortgage bonds, three basis points a year, cash paid monthly.

APCB A core bond fund with a dimmer switch: Envestnet keeps most of the portfolio in a passive sleeve tracking the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate and lets managers run 10% to 60% actively, for 0.36% with no waiver, near the category median.

Stated mandate

AGG The fund seeks to track the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Bond Index, providing broad exposure to the total U.S. investment-grade bond market.

APCB The Fund seeks current income while maintaining relatively low principal volatility.

Why people hold it

  • AGG 0.03% a year against a peer-group median near 0.36%. On a bond fund, the fee comes straight out of the coupon, so the gap matters more than it looks.
  • A $100 billion-plus fund and very actively traded, the kind of depth that keeps bid-ask costs down for retail-sized orders.
  • Tracks the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate closely, with one of the tightest index-following records in its peer group. Income is distributed monthly.
  • Running since 2003, giving it one of the longest track records among U.S. bond index ETFs.
  • APCB Active is a dial, not a setting: the adviser and sub-advisers run 10% to 60% of net assets, and the rest sits in the passive sleeve built around the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate.sec.govsec.gov 2
  • 0.36%, with no fee waiver doing the lifting, and that sits near the category median even with Envestnet plus outside sub-advisers on the active sleeves.sec.gov
  • Guardrails in writing: at least 80% of net assets in bonds rated investment grade or better, with up to 20% allowed in high yield.sec.gov
  • Pays monthly, and the portfolio has stayed close to the income-with-low-principal-volatility mandate its filings describe.

Worth knowing

  • AGG Investment grade and U.S. dollar only. High-yield debt and foreign bonds sit outside the mandate, so this is designed as core ballast rather than a yield hunt.
  • Rate risk comes as it comes. The index gets tracked whether yields rise or fall, with no manager stepping in to shorten duration.
  • The same index is sold by SPAB, SCHZ and BBAG at the same 0.03%. The portfolio is the commodity here; scale and trading depth are the tiebreakers.
  • APCB The active sleeves are what you pay for: AGG, BND and SCHZ track the plain core bond market for 0.03%.
  • The mix is not fixed. The actively managed share shifts over time with economic conditions, anywhere inside that 10% to 60% range, and high yield can be part of it.sec.gov
  • Launched in 2023 and only moderately traded, so the record is short and trade timing matters more here than at the giant index cores.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
