AGGAiShares Core U.S. Aggregate Bond ETF

BBAGAJPMorgan BetaBuilders U.S. Aggregate Bond ETF

In short

AGG Launched in 2003, one of the first funds to pack the entire U.S. investment-grade bond market into a single ticker: Treasuries, corporates and mortgage bonds, three basis points a year, cash paid monthly.

BBAG Core US bond exposure for 0.03% a year. JPMorgan turned up late to the Agg price war in 2018 and came in at the floor, matching the fee charged by rivals many times its size.

Stated mandate

AGG The fund seeks to track the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Bond Index, providing broad exposure to the total U.S. investment-grade bond market.

BBAG The fund seeks results that closely track the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Bond Index, which represents the U.S. investment-grade fixed-rate bond market.

Why people hold it

  • AGG 0.03% a year against a peer-group median near 0.36%. On a bond fund, the fee comes straight out of the coupon, so the gap matters more than it looks.
  • A $100 billion-plus fund and very actively traded, the kind of depth that keeps bid-ask costs down for retail-sized orders.
  • Tracks the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate closely, with one of the tightest index-following records in its peer group. Income is distributed monthly.
  • Running since 2003, giving it one of the longest track records among U.S. bond index ETFs.
  • BBAG 0.03% a year sits on the category's price floor, level with AGG, BND, SPAB and SCHZ and far below the typical core-bond fund.
  • The whole job is hugging the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Bond Index, and it does that tightly: among the closer trackers in a crowded core-bond field.jpmorgan.com
  • One line item covers roughly 1,700 investment-grade, fixed-rate US bonds. No issue picking, no maturity ladders to babysit.
  • Distributions come monthly, not quarterly, so income lands on a steadier cadence.

Worth knowing

  • AGG Investment grade and U.S. dollar only. High-yield debt and foreign bonds sit outside the mandate, so this is designed as core ballast rather than a yield hunt.
  • Rate risk comes as it comes. The index gets tracked whether yields rise or fall, with no manager stepping in to shorten duration.
  • The same index is sold by SPAB, SCHZ and BBAG at the same 0.03%. The portfolio is the commodity here; scale and trading depth are the tiebreakers.
  • BBAG Interest rates drive this thing. Broad investment-grade bonds lose price when yields rise, and the fund carries that exposure undiluted.
  • Investment grade, fixed rate, US only. High-yield credit, floating-rate paper and foreign bonds sit outside the mandate by design.
  • Smaller and less heavily traded than AGG and BND, so spreads can run wider. Limit orders matter more here than with the giants.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
