Our read on each fund
AGGA
BIVA
In short
AGG Launched in 2003, one of the first funds to pack the entire U.S. investment-grade bond market into a single ticker: Treasuries, corporates and mortgage bonds, three basis points a year, cash paid monthly.
BIV Most bond funds hand you the entire market. BIV picks a lane: investment-grade U.S. government and corporate bonds in the 5-to-10-year band, sampled by Vanguard, priced at three basis points.
Stated mandate
AGG The fund seeks to track the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Bond Index, providing broad exposure to the total U.S. investment-grade bond market.
BIV The fund seeks to track a market-weighted bond index representing the intermediate-term investment-grade U.S. bond market. It uses index sampling and normally invests at least 80% of assets in securities represented by the index.

How we measure overlap
Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
