Our read on each fund
AGGA
TOTLB
In short
AGG Launched in 2003, one of the first funds to pack the entire U.S. investment-grade bond market into a single ticker: Treasuries, corporates and mortgage bonds, three basis points a year, cash paid monthly.
TOTL Most core bond ETFs clone the Agg and call it a day. TOTL hires a manager to trade around it instead: actively managed, benchmarked to the Bloomberg US Aggregate, and on the tape since 2015.
Stated mandate
AGG The fund seeks to track the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Bond Index, providing broad exposure to the total U.S. investment-grade bond market.
TOTL The fund seeks to maximize total return through actively managed core fixed-income exposure benchmarked to the Bloomberg US Aggregate Bond Index.

How we measure overlap
Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
