APRWCAllianzIM U.S. Equity Buffer20 Apr ETF

PSFOBPacer Swan SOS Flex (October) ETF

In short

APRW The April door in AllianzIM's buffer lineup: one year of the big S&P 500 tracker ETF's price move, cushioned against the first 20% of losses and capped on the upside, with the clock resetting every April 1.

PSFO Pacer's October-dated buffer fund absorbs the first 20% of an S&P 500 drop over each 12-month period, in exchange for a ceiling on the upside. At 0.49%, it charges less than the typical fund in its buffer peer group.

Stated mandate

APRW The Fund seeks to match the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust’s share-price return over the current one-year Outcome Period, subject to an upside Cap, while buffering the first 20% of losses.

PSFO The fund seeks to match the pre-fee and pre-expense returns of the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust.

Why people hold it

  • APRW Absorbs the first 20% of the reference S&P 500 ETF's share-price decline over each one-year outcome period, running April 1 to March 31, then resetting.
  • Actively managed, but the contract is mechanical: a stated 20% buffer against one well-known reference ETF, not a manager's stock picks.
  • One month in AllianzIM's rolling series (MAYW runs the May cycle), so start dates can be laddered instead of pinned to a single entry point.
  • Running since 2020, and it lands in the upper half of a crowded field of deep 20% buffer funds on our review.
  • PSFO 0.49% a year, below the median fee in its S&P 500 buffer cohort and well under peers like PMAY (0.79%) and BUFZ (0.95%).
  • Built to absorb the first 20% of a decline in the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) over each outcome period before the fund itself starts taking losses.
  • A 1940 Act ETF holding its own option package, not a bank-issued note, so no third-party credit sits between you and the payoff. Running since 2021.
  • Rates in the upper tier of a two-dozen-fund group of S&P 500 buffer strategies, largely on price.

Worth knowing

  • APRW Upside is capped, and the cap is reset each April at whatever options cost then. Buffer and cap apply to the full period, so mid-period exits get neither intact.
  • 0.74% is the going rate here, not a discount: PSFM and PSFJ charge 0.49% and PBFR 0.50% for 20% buffers.
  • Modest assets and light trading versus the category's biggest names, so limit orders matter. The structure targets price outcomes, not income.
  • PSFO The price of the cushion: gains stop at a cap fixed at the start of each period, and the fund hasn't been an income payer.
  • Buffer and cap are engineered for the full October 1 to September 30 stretch. Buy mid-period and your real cushion and ceiling differ from the headline terms.
  • Small asset base and light trading, which usually means wider spreads and more attention needed on how orders get entered.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
