In short

ARKX ARK's only space fund, and one of the rare ones in its niche run by stock pickers instead of an index. Roughly 40 global names spanning rockets, the technology that makes them work, and the companies that quietly cash in.

SPCL Space exposure with the volume knob turned to 2x. SPCL holds swaps, not rockets, aiming for twice the one-day move of a hand-picked basket of three to ten companies that earn most of their revenue in orbit.

Stated mandate

ARKX The fund seeks long-term capital growth by actively investing mainly in domestic and foreign equity securities of companies involved in space and defense innovation, including aerospace, enabling technologies, and aerospace beneficiaries.

SPCL The Fund seeks two-times the one-day performance of an actively managed Target Portfolio composed of space securities. It provides leveraged exposure to companies involved in space-related technologies and services.

Why people hold it

  • ARKX Actively managed rather than index-tracked: ARK's team hand-picks roughly 40 names instead of buying whatever screens as 'space'.ark-funds.com
  • The mandate reaches past rocket builders to enabling technologies and aerospace beneficiaries, companies that profit from orbit without ever leaving the ground.
  • Global by charter, holding both US and foreign shares, so the theme isn't capped at American launch providers and defense primes.
  • Running since 2021 and actively traded at a decent size, which puts it in the upper half of the space-fund group on the practical stuff.
  • SPCL The leveraged option in a peer group of unlevered space funds: it targets 200% of its Target Portfolio's move for a single day, built with swaps and listed options.defianceetfs.com
  • Strict screen: a holding must draw at least 50% of revenue or operating activity from space, so no defense prime rides along on a side business.sec.gov
  • Three to ten names, roughly equal weight, rebalanced daily. The adviser can swap names any time around launches or operational milestones, not just at the quarterly review.sec.gov
  • The day's Target Portfolio is posted on the fund's own website, so the basket behind the leverage is visible.sec.gov

Worth knowing

  • ARKX The 0.75% fee sits right at the median for space funds and above index-based rivals such as ROKT (0.45%) and ORBX (0.50%).
  • Roughly 40 holdings plus a human making the calls means single positions and ARK's stock-picking judgment both carry real weight here.
  • The stated goal is long-term capital growth, not income; the fund has not been making regular distributions.
  • SPCL Daily reset means compounding: over periods longer than a day, results can diverge widely from 2x the move, and the fund's documents warn a full loss is possible in one trading day.defianceetfs.comsec.gov
  • During a reconstitution, generally up to five trading days, exposure can sit anywhere from roughly 150% to 220% of net assets instead of 200%.defianceetfs.com
  • At 1.29%, the fee runs above the category's typical level, and Defiance's own unlevered space fund UFOX charges 0.30%. This is a 2026 launch with a small asset base.
