CERYAState Street SPDR Bloomberg Enhanced Roll Yield Commodity Strategy No K-1 ETF

In short

BCD The patient cousin in the commodity aisle: the same broad Bloomberg basket, but bought three months further out the futures curve instead of at the front. Diversified commodity exposure, no Schedule K-1 in the mail.

CERY Broad commodity exposure without the K-1 envelope. CERY tracks Bloomberg's Enhanced Roll Yield index, a rules-based long-only basket held through synthetic futures, and charges 0.28% in a category where the typical fee is far higher.

Stated mandate

BCD The Fund seeks to closely track, before fees and expenses, the Bloomberg Commodity Index 3 Month Forward Total Return Index.

CERY The fund seeks to track the Bloomberg Enhanced Roll Yield Total Return Index, which represents diversified, long-only exposure to broad commodities through synthetic futures positions.

Why people hold it

  • BCD Tracks the Bloomberg Commodity Index 3 Month Forward, so it sits further out the curve rather than rolling front-month contracts, a different answer to the roll-cost problem.
  • 0.30% a year, well under the median fee in the broad commodity futures group, and one of the stronger implementations in that peer set.
  • K-1 free by design: shareholders get a 1099 instead of the partnership paperwork that follows many futures funds into April.
  • Roughly 30 futures positions spanning the all-commodity basket, so no single barrel or bushel steers the whole fund. Trading since 2017.
  • CERY Costs 0.28% a year against a category norm nearer 0.68%. Fees bite hard in commodity futures funds, where there are no dividends to paper over the drag.
  • Tracks Bloomberg's Enhanced Roll Yield index: rules-based, long-only commodity exposure via synthetic futures. Roll mechanics come from index design, not a manager's call.ssga.com
  • Built as a 1940 Act fund, so shareholders get a 1099 rather than the partnership K-1 that many commodity futures vehicles send.ssga.com
  • Sits with BCI and BCD at the low-fee end of the broad commodity futures group and rates among the strongest implementations in it.

Worth knowing

  • BCD It is structured as a commodity pool, not a standard stock-and-bond fund, so the rules and tax mechanics differ from an equity ETF.
  • Sibling fund BCI holds the front-of-curve version of the same basket for a slightly lower fee. The longer-dated tilt here behaves differently as the curve shifts.
  • Cash comes out annually or semiannually, not monthly, and the fund is moderately traded rather than one of the giants of the category.
  • CERY Launched in 2024, so the record is short. The roll rules have not been tested across a full commodity cycle yet.
  • Long-only by design. There is no short side, so a broad commodity downturn passes straight through to the fund.
  • Distributions come once or twice a year. This is commodity price exposure, not a paycheck.
