BITSCGlobal X Blockchain & Bitcoin Strategy ETF

LEGRBFirst Trust Indxx Innovative Transaction & Process ETF

In short

BITS Most crypto ETFs sell you the pickaxes. BITS holds both sides: long positions in U.S.-listed bitcoin futures alongside companies built around blockchain adoption, actively managed in one ordinary ETF wrapper.

LEGR Blockchain, hold the coins. LEGR has tracked the Indxx Blockchain Index since January 2018, owning roughly 110 global companies that build with the technology or stand to benefit from it, rather than the tokens themselves.

Stated mandate

BITS The fund seeks long-term capital appreciation by combining long positions in U.S.-listed bitcoin futures with direct or indirect investments in companies positioned to benefit from blockchain adoption.

LEGR The Fund seeks to track the performance of the Indxx Blockchain Index before fees and expenses. The index targets companies involved with blockchain technology or positioned to benefit from its use in business processes.

Why people hold it

  • BITS Two exposures, one ticker: bitcoin futures plus blockchain-linked companies, instead of picking between the coin trade and the equity trade.globalxetfs.com
  • 0.65% expense ratio, which sits below the midpoint of its blockchain-and-crypto-equity peer group and undercuts BLOK.
  • Actively managed, so the manager can shift the balance between futures and equities rather than tracking a fixed index.globalxetfs.com
  • Standard 1940 Act fund structure: brokerage account, intraday trading, no wallets or private keys to manage. One of the stronger builds in its peer group.
  • LEGR A first-wave name: launched January 2018, and it has tracked the same blockchain index through a full crypto boom and bust.
  • Picks and shovels, not whitepapers: roughly 110 global stocks either working with blockchain or positioned to benefit from it inside their own business processes.
  • Spreading the theme across about 110 operating companies keeps any single name from dominating, and the fund sits in the upper half of its global thematic peer group.

Worth knowing

  • BITS Bitcoin exposure comes from futures contracts, not coins. Results follow the futures market and the cost of rolling contracts forward, which can diverge from spot.
  • Small and thinly traded next to the big names in the category. Limit orders and a look at the spread do real work here.
  • Distributions are infrequent, roughly annual or semiannual. The mandate is capital appreciation, not a paycheck.
  • LEGR The 0.65% expense ratio sits above the typical fee among global thematic ETFs, and several funds in that group charge a fraction of it.
  • It trades thinly, so bid-ask spreads can run wider than on giant ETFs. Limit orders do real work here.
  • Stocks, not coins. Crypto moves reach this fund only through share prices of companies where blockchain may be one line in a much larger business.
