BKAGABNY Mellon Core Bond ETF

NUAGANuveen Enhanced Yield U.S. Aggregate Bond

In short

BKAG A core bond index fund that charges nothing. BKAG tracks the same Bloomberg US Aggregate benchmark the giants track, at a 0.00% expense ratio, and has been doing it since 2020.

NUAG The Agg, re-sorted for income. NUAG tracks an ICE BofA index that takes the same investment-grade universe and tilts weight toward its higher-yielding corners, with rules fencing in how far duration and credit quality can drift. Fee: 0.16%.

Stated mandate

BKAG The fund seeks to track the Bloomberg US Aggregate Total Return Index.

NUAG The Fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the investment results of the ICE BofA Enhanced Yield U.S. Broad Bond Index.

Why people hold it

  • BKAG A 0.00% expense ratio. The median fund in the core bond group charges 0.36%, and even the cheap giants (BND, SPAB, SCHZ) charge 0.03%.
  • Tracks the Bloomberg US Aggregate Total Return Index tightly, one of the closest index-following records in its peer group.
  • Broad by design: roughly 4,000 bonds in the portfolio, with distributions paid monthly rather than quarterly.
  • A multi-billion-dollar fund from BNY Mellon, wrapped in a standard 1940 Act ETF structure with no exotic mechanics.
  • NUAG Not a market-cap clone. The index buckets the investment-grade universe by asset class, sector, credit, duration and maturity, then leans into higher-yielding buckets while limiting drift from the base index.nuveen.com
  • 0.16% sits below the typical fee in the core-bond aisle, which is unusual for a rules-based tilt rather than a plain market-cap tracker.
  • Broad plumbing underneath: roughly 1,500 holdings spanning Treasuries, corporates, residential and commercial mortgage paper and asset-backed debt. Pays monthly.nuveen.com
  • Running since 2016 and it owns this lane: no other fund in our core-bond coverage tracks the same enhanced-yield index. The portfolio has stayed tight to its stated mandate.

Worth knowing

  • BKAG Rate risk is the trade-off. This is full-market bond exposure, and bond prices move opposite interest rates. Volatility is the weakest part of its profile.
  • Moderately traded, not one of the volume monsters in the category. Spreads and limit orders matter more here than with the largest core bond names.
  • At zero, the fee edge over 0.03% rivals is real but small in dollar terms, so tracking and trading costs do more of the work.
  • NUAG Small and thinly traded next to the category's giants, so spreads can be wider and size matters when you trade.
  • Plain-vanilla Agg trackers (AGG, SPAB and SCHZ) charge 0.03%. The reweighting engine is what the extra cost buys.
  • Tilting toward yield means tilting toward credit and spread risk. The rules cap how far sector weights, duration and tracking error can wander from the Agg, but they do not erase the difference.nuveen.com

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
