BKAGABNY Mellon Core Bond ETF

NXUSBNuveen International Aggregate Bond ETF

In short

BKAG A core bond index fund that charges nothing. BKAG tracks the same Bloomberg US Aggregate benchmark the giants track, at a 0.00% expense ratio, and has been doing it since 2020.

NXUS Most "aggregate bond" ETFs stop at the US border. NXUS starts there: roughly 3,200 investment-grade bonds from developed and emerging markets, none of them in dollars, with the currency risk hedged back to USD monthly, for 0.08% a year.

Stated mandate

BKAG The fund seeks to track the Bloomberg US Aggregate Total Return Index.

NXUS The Fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the Bloomberg Global Aggregate ex-USD (Hedged) Index. Its strategy may also use debt securities outside the Index, including asset-backed securities.

Why people hold it

  • BKAG A 0.00% expense ratio. The median fund in the core bond group charges 0.36%, and even the cheap giants (BND, SPAB, SCHZ) charge 0.03%.
  • Tracks the Bloomberg US Aggregate Total Return Index tightly, one of the closest index-following records in its peer group.
  • Broad by design: roughly 4,000 bonds in the portfolio, with distributions paid monthly rather than quarterly.
  • A multi-billion-dollar fund from BNY Mellon, wrapped in a standard 1940 Act ETF structure with no exotic mechanics.
  • NXUS 0.08% a year, below the category median, and that is the real fare: gross and net fees are the same number, with no waiver propping it up.
  • Roughly 3,200 bonds (sovereign, corporate, securitized) across about two dozen local-currency markets, developed and emerging. One of the broader portfolios in its peer group.sec.govsec.gov 2
  • The index hedges its non-dollar exposure back to the US dollar monthly, so what you hold is foreign interest-rate exposure rather than a view on the dollar.sec.gov
  • AGG, BND, SPAB and SCHZ each charge 0.03% and each stops at the US border. This is the ex-US half they leave out, and it pays monthly.

Worth knowing

  • BKAG Rate risk is the trade-off. This is full-market bond exposure, and bond prices move opposite interest rates. Volatility is the weakest part of its profile.
  • Moderately traded, not one of the volume monsters in the category. Spreads and limit orders matter more here than with the largest core bond names.
  • At zero, the fee edge over 0.03% rivals is real but small in dollar terms, so tracking and trading costs do more of the work.
  • NXUS The hedge resets monthly, so dollar moves between reset dates flow through. Hedging dampens currency swings rather than removing them.sec.gov
  • Investment grade only: the index excludes subordinated, convertible, floating-rate and inflation-linked bonds. No high-yield kicker.sec.gov
  • It launched in September 2025, so the record is short, and it trades more lightly than the US core giants, which can show up in bid-ask spreads.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
