BOILDProShares Ultra Bloomberg Natural Gas

DIGCProShares Ultra Energy

In short

BOIL The only natural gas play in a leveraged energy aisle full of oil and energy stocks. BOIL aims for two times the daily move of a Bloomberg natural gas futures index, in a market known for violent swings.

DIG Two times the daily move of the S&P 500's energy sector, delivered in stocks rather than crude futures. Trading since 2007, DIG is one of the originals in leveraged energy, built on big integrated oil names instead of wildcat drillers.

Stated mandate

BOIL The fund seeks daily investment results, before fees and expenses, equal to two times the daily performance of the Bloomberg Natural Gas Subindex SM.

DIG The fund seeks daily investment results, before fees and expenses, equal to twice the daily performance of the S&P Energy Select Sector Index.

Why people hold it

  • BOIL One job, spelled out in the fund's own documents: two times the daily performance of the Bloomberg Natural Gas Subindex, reset each day.proshares.com
  • The cohort's only gas ticket. ERX, GUSH and DIG track energy equities and UCO tracks crude; nothing else here follows the gas curve.
  • The 0.95% fee sits right at the cohort median, and shares trade actively, which matters when the holding period is measured in days.
  • Trading since 2011, a long run for a leveraged commodity product and an unusually deep track record in this corner of the market.
  • DIG Leverage on the blue-chip benchmark: twice the daily move of the S&P Energy Select Sector Index, a cap-weighted slice of S&P 500 energy names, so the big integrateds set the pace.sec.gov
  • Stocks, not barrels. The exposure sits on a concentrated basket of roughly 30 energy equities, with no crude futures roll in the machinery, unlike peer UCO.proshares.com
  • Running since January 2007, through multiple oil booms and busts, it is one of the longest-standing 2x energy funds, and it passes along underlying stock dividends quarterly.

Worth knowing

  • BOIL Daily reset means results compound. Hold through a choppy stretch and the outcome can differ, sometimes sharply, from two times the index move over that period.
  • Natural gas swings hard on weather and storage, and doubling it daily puts this at the wildest end of an already volatile peer group.
  • It is a commodity pool holding futures, not shares of gas producers, so it is not built to pay income.
  • DIG Leverage rebalances daily, so returns over any longer hold can differ significantly from 2x the index; ProShares notes a near-50% one-day index drop could wipe out the investment.proshares.comsec.gov
  • 0.95% net of a waiver through September 30, 2027 (1.06% gross) sits near the category median, while newer rival XLEX lists 0.45% and ERX 0.91%.
  • One of the less-traded funds in its corner of the market, so bid-ask spreads and limit orders matter more here than with the biggest leveraged energy names.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
