BOILDProShares Ultra Bloomberg Natural Gas

GUSHCDirexion Daily S&P Oil & Gas Exp. & Prod. Bull 2X ETF

In short

BOIL The only natural gas play in a leveraged energy aisle full of oil and energy stocks. BOIL aims for two times the daily move of a Bloomberg natural gas futures index, in a market known for violent swings.

GUSH A 2x bet on the drillers, not the barrel. GUSH aims for 200% of the daily move of an S&P index of oil and gas exploration and production stocks, resetting every single close.

Stated mandate

BOIL The fund seeks daily investment results, before fees and expenses, equal to two times the daily performance of the Bloomberg Natural Gas Subindex SM.

GUSH The fund seeks daily investment results equal to 200% of the performance of the S&P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production Select Industry Index, before fees and expenses.

Why people hold it

  • BOIL One job, spelled out in the fund's own documents: two times the daily performance of the Bloomberg Natural Gas Subindex, reset each day.proshares.com
  • The cohort's only gas ticket. ERX, GUSH and DIG track energy equities and UCO tracks crude; nothing else here follows the gas curve.
  • The 0.95% fee sits right at the cohort median, and shares trade actively, which matters when the holding period is measured in days.
  • Trading since 2011, a long run for a leveraged commodity product and an unusually deep track record in this corner of the market.
  • GUSH Targets 200% of the daily move of the S&P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production Select Industry Index: the companies pulling it out of the ground, not a broad energy basket.direxion.com
  • Exposure comes from roughly 60 E&P stocks rather than a crude or gas futures ladder, unlike commodity-based peers such as UCO and BOIL.
  • 0.94% expense ratio lands at the low end of its leveraged energy peer group, below DIG's 1.07%.
  • Live since 2015 and actively traded, so it carries a full oil cycle of operating history.

Worth knowing

  • BOIL Daily reset means results compound. Hold through a choppy stretch and the outcome can differ, sometimes sharply, from two times the index move over that period.
  • Natural gas swings hard on weather and storage, and doubling it daily puts this at the wildest end of an already volatile peer group.
  • It is a commodity pool holding futures, not shares of gas producers, so it is not built to pay income.
  • GUSH The 2x target applies to one trading day. Over longer holds, daily compounding can pull results away from twice the index move for that stretch.direxion.com
  • One industry, doubled. E&P share prices move with crude, and the leverage magnifies both directions.
  • A near-1% fee is heavy next to plain index funds, and it accrues the whole time the position is open. Distributions are quarterly.

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
