CEMBBiShares J.P. Morgan EM Corporate Bond ETF

EMBAiShares J.P. Morgan USD Emerging Markets Bond ETF

In short

CEMB Most emerging-markets funds buy governments or stocks. CEMB buys the companies: roughly 1,100 dollar-denominated corporate bonds from EM issuers, in an iShares wrapper that has been running since 2012 and pays monthly.

EMB Emerging markets without the currency guesswork: EMB owns dollar-denominated EM debt, tracking J.P. Morgan's index since 2007. Roughly 600 bonds, income paid monthly.

Stated mandate

CEMB The fund seeks to track the J.P. Morgan CEMBI Broad Diversified Core Index, representing U.S.-dollar-denominated emerging-market corporate bonds.

EMB The fund seeks to follow an index made up of U.S.-dollar-denominated bonds issued in emerging markets.

Why people hold it

  • CEMB The bonds are issued in U.S. dollars, so local-currency swings aren't part of the package the way they are in most EM funds.
  • Roughly 1,100 corporate bonds across emerging-market issuers, so no single borrower carries the portfolio.
  • Income lands monthly, and the fund has been running since its 2012 launch, through multiple EM credit cycles.
  • Follows a J.P. Morgan CEMBI Broad Diversified Core index rather than a house-built benchmark, so the rulebook belongs to a third party.
  • EMB Dollar-denominated by mandate. The bonds are issued in USD, so local currency moves don't pass straight through to what the fund collects.ishares.com
  • About 600 bonds across emerging market borrowers, one of the broadest baskets in its peer group.
  • A multi-billion-dollar fund running since 2007 and one of the most actively traded ways to get this exposure, which tends to show up as tighter spreads at retail size.
  • Distributions land monthly rather than quarterly.

Worth knowing

  • CEMB 0.50% a year. That's about the median for its emerging-markets peer group, but far above broad index equity options like VEXC at 0.07%.
  • Dollar bonds remove the currency question, not the credit one. You still hold company default risk plus the country risk standing behind each issuer.
  • Mid-size and moderately traded rather than a category giant, so spreads can run wider than on the largest bond ETFs.
  • EMB Costs 0.39% a year, above its cohort's 0.19% median and well above plain EM stock index funds like VWO and SCHE at 0.06%.
  • It's a bond fund sitting in a mostly-stock peer group. What drives it is emerging market credit and interest rates, not company earnings.
  • The USD-only screen skips local-currency emerging market government debt, so that slice of the market, and its currency swings, is left out.ishares.com
