CMDTBPIMCO Commodity Strategy Active Exchange-Traded Fund

DBBBInvesco DB Base Metals Fund

In short

CMDT PIMCO took the standard commodity futures fund and added the thing it is known for: an actively managed bond portfolio sitting behind the commodity bets. The mandate is to beat the Bloomberg Commodity Index, not mirror it.

DBB The metals that build things, not the ones that sit in vaults. Since 2007 DBB has held futures on industrial metals like copper, aluminum and zinc, with a roll rule that hunts for the best-priced contract instead of always buying the nearest one.

Stated mandate

CMDT The fund aims to achieve a total return that outperforms the Bloomberg Commodity Index Total Return, while maintaining prudent investment management.

DBB The fund is designed to track the DBIQ Optimum Yield Industrial Metals Index Excess Return, which reflects changes in the market value of the base-metals sector.

Why people hold it

  • CMDT Active by design. The stated objective is to outperform the Bloomberg Commodity Index Total Return, not replicate it.
  • Two engines in one ticker: swaps, futures and commodity-linked notes for the commodity exposure, an actively managed fixed income portfolio as the collateral behind them.
  • A 1940 Act fund that routes commodity-linked exposure through a Cayman subsidiary, so holders get a 1099 rather than a partnership K-1.
  • Global commodity reach spread across roughly 300 positions, with cash distributed quarterly.
  • DBB A clean industrial-metals basket: futures on liquid base metals such as aluminum, zinc and copper, with no gold or oil muddying the signal.sec.gov
  • The Optimum Yield roll picks contracts to limit losses when the futures curve slopes up and to capture the benefit when it slopes down, rather than defaulting to the front month.sec.govinvesco.com
  • Trading since January 2007 through several full commodity cycles, and one of the steadier, more liquid names in its futures-commodity peer group.
  • Expense ratio of 0.81%, sitting right at the middle of the futures-based commodity pack (PDBC 0.74%, HARD 0.78%).

Worth knowing

  • CMDT At 0.98% a year, it sits above cheaper index-based options in the commodity futures group such as PDBC (0.74%) and HARD (0.78%). Active management is what the premium buys.
  • Tracking is not the goal here. Manager calls can push results away from the Bloomberg Commodity Index in either direction.
  • The bond collateral sleeve brings interest rate and credit sensitivity that a plain futures-and-Treasuries commodity fund does not carry.
  • DBB It is a commodity pool, so tax time brings a Schedule K-1 instead of a 1099. Peers like PDBC are built specifically to avoid that paperwork.invesco.com
  • Base metals track the global industrial cycle, and the prospectus materials describe the futures markets the fund trades as volatile and speculative.sec.gov
  • Invesco updated the underlying index methodology in November 2025 (wider eligible commodity list, liquidity screens, weight caps), so the metals mix can differ from the historic lineup.invesco.com
