CMDYAiShares Bloomberg Roll Select Commodity Strategy ETF

SDCICUSCF SummerHaven Dynamic Commodity Strategy No K-1 Fund

In short

CMDY Commodities without the worst of the futures math. CMDY tracks the Roll Select version of the Bloomberg commodity index, where contract choice is written into the rules to ease rolling costs, and charges 0.29% to do it.

SDCI Most broad commodity funds hold a fixed, production-weighted basket. SDCI rebuilds every month, keeping the 14 futures showing the deepest backwardation, equally weighted. A roll-yield strategy in a No K-1 wrapper.

Stated mandate

CMDY The fund seeks to track an index representing a broad range of commodity exposures, using enhanced roll selection on a total-return basis.

SDCI The Fund seeks long-term total return through exposure to a diversified group of commodities, primarily using futures contracts and related instruments.

Why people hold it

  • CMDY The name is the strategy. Enhanced roll selection is baked into the index it tracks, so which futures contract to hold is a rule, not an afterthought.
  • 0.29% a year sits in the low-fee tier of broad commodity funds, next to BCI, CERY and BCD, and well under what the category typically charges.
  • One ticker, a broad basket of roughly 60 futures positions, run on a total-return basis that counts collateral income alongside commodity price moves.
  • Live since 2018 under the iShares roof, and one of the stronger implementations in its broad-basket commodity peer group.
  • SDCI The index rebuilds monthly, keeping the 14 most backwardated of 27 eligible commodity futures at equal notional weight. It hunts roll yield instead of ranking commodities by production size.sec.gov
  • The rules force all four primary sectors (petroleum, grains, industrial metals, precious metals) into the lineup, so the monthly rotation cannot pile entirely into one corner.sec.gov
  • The name is the structure: a 1940 Act fund rather than a commodity partnership, so holders skip the Schedule K-1 paperwork that older futures funds hand out.
  • Running since 2018 with assets in the hundreds of millions and moderate daily volume, it is an established option rather than a launch-week experiment.

Worth knowing

  • CMDY Moderately traded rather than a volume monster. Spreads can run wider than the mega-cap index funds, which shows up most on large or hurried orders.
  • It is structured as a commodity pool, not a plain stock fund, so the tax paperwork and reporting work differently. Check the details before filing season.
  • Distributions land annually or semiannually, not monthly, and the roll rule addresses futures mechanics only. Commodity prices still swing hard on their own.
  • SDCI At 0.80% a year it sits above the typical broad commodity fund; plain-index rivals such as BCI (0.26%) and CMDY (0.29%) charge a fraction of that.
  • It is actively managed, seeking exposure that corresponds to the SummerHaven index rather than replicating it, so fund and index can part ways.sec.gov
  • Fourteen equal-weight slots and a monthly reshuffle mean sector weights swing widely, and a backwardation screen can leave headline commodities out of the basket.sec.gov

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
