ELDCWisdomTree Emerging Markets Local Debt Fund

FEMBCFirst Trust Emerging Markets Local Currency Bond ETF

In short

ELD Most emerging-market local-debt ETFs clone the J.P. Morgan GBI-EM index. ELD treats it as a scorecard instead: a 2010-vintage active fund picking its own mix of local-currency government bonds.

FEMB Emerging-market debt bought in the borrower's own money, not dollars, and picked by a manager rather than an index. At least 80% of assets sit in local-currency bonds, so the currency move counts alongside the coupon. Pays monthly.

Stated mandate

ELD The Fund seeks high total returns combining income and capital appreciation. Its strategy is to pursue that objective primarily through debt denominated in emerging-market local currencies.

FEMB The Fund seeks maximum total return and current income.

Why people hold it

  • ELD The benchmark is a yardstick, not a blueprint. An active mandate lets managers lean into or away from countries the index weights by rule.
  • Co-managed by WisdomTree and Mellon Investments, so an outside bond shop's credit and currency work sits behind the portfolio.investing.com
  • Spreads exposure across a couple hundred positions and every major EM region: Latin America, Asia, Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
  • Income lands monthly rather than quarterly, and the mandate targets both yield and price appreciation from local-currency debt.
  • FEMB Actively managed, so the team chooses which countries, curves and currencies to own instead of inheriting an index weighting. First Trust has run it this way since 2014.ftportfolios.com
  • The mandate is specific: at least 80% of assets in bonds, notes and bills from emerging-market issuers, denominated in the issuer's local currency. The FX exposure is the point, not a side effect.ftportfolios.com
  • Stated goal is maximum total return and current income, and the fund distributes monthly rather than quarterly.
  • For a corner of the market this specialized, it holds up on the plumbing: hundreds of millions in assets and steady day-to-day trading.

Worth knowing

  • ELD At 0.55%, the fee is category-median but well above the 0.30% charged by index trackers EMLC and LEMB. Active calls have to cover that gap.
  • It trades far less than the category's heavyweights, so wider bid-ask spreads are more likely, especially in size or in a jumpy market.
  • Currency is unhedged. Returns ride local rates and EM currencies against the dollar, which can cut both ways.wisdomtree.com
  • FEMB At 0.85% a year, it sits well above what a typical emerging-market ETF charges. Active management in local-currency debt is the reason, but the fee is a real headwind on income.
  • Currency cuts both ways here. Local-currency bonds mean dollar strength can offset coupon income and dollar weakness can add to returns. Nothing is hedged away.ftportfolios.com
  • Concentrated book of roughly 60 bonds, so individual country and currency calls carry weight, and there is no published index to measure the manager against.
