EMHYBiShares J.P. Morgan EM High Yield Bond ETF

HYEMBVanEck Emerging Markets High Yield Bond ETF

In short

EMHY Most high-yield ETFs buy American junk bonds. EMHY crosses borders instead: dollar-denominated high yield from emerging-market governments and companies, in one index-tracking, monthly-paying wrapper iShares has run since 2012.

HYEM Most funds in the high yield aisle buy American junk. HYEM leaves the country: a passive index of emerging markets corporate high yield, roughly 500 bonds deep, trading since 2012 and paying monthly.

Stated mandate

EMHY The fund seeks to track an index of U.S.-dollar-denominated high-yield bonds issued by emerging-market sovereigns and corporations, providing exposure to emerging-market debt.

HYEM HYEM seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the ICE BofA Diversified High Yield US Emerging Markets Corporate Plus Index.

Why people hold it

  • EMHY Two credit worlds in one ticker. The index blends EM sovereign and corporate high yield, spread across roughly 700 bonds, so no single government or borrower drives the fund.ishares.com
  • Everything inside is priced in US dollars. You take emerging-market credit risk without layering on the currency swings of local-currency debt.ishares.com
  • Running since 2012 and paying monthly, it has carried this mandate through multiple emerging-market stress cycles rather than launching into a fashionable one.
  • HYEM A specialist, not a core holding. It passively tracks an ICE BofA index of emerging markets high yield corporate bonds, a corner most funds in this cohort never touch.
  • Spread thin on purpose: roughly 500 bonds, so no single issuer or borrower carries the fund.
  • Running since 2012 and paying monthly, with a 0.40% fee that lands right at the median for high yield bond ETFs.
  • Lands in the upper half of a crowded high yield field, helped by its broad bond lineup and how smoothly it trades.

Worth knowing

  • EMHY Specialist exposure carries a specialist price: 0.50% a year, against 0.03% for SCYB and 0.05% for SPHY on plain US high-yield beta. Different job, different bill.
  • Junk credit risk plus country risk. EM sovereign and corporate bonds bring politics, reserves and restructuring into a portfolio already sitting below investment grade.
  • A mid-size fund with moderate volume, not one of the category's traffic leaders. Bid-ask spreads on EM bonds tend to widen exactly when credit markets get noisy.
  • HYEM That 0.40% is median for the category but many times what plain US junk funds charge (SCYB at 0.03%, SPHY at 0.05%). The fee buys the emerging markets mandate, not broad high yield beta.
  • Emerging markets credit stacks country and political risk on top of ordinary default risk, so it can behave quite differently from US high yield.
  • Moderately traded rather than a giant of the aisle, so limit orders and size discipline matter more here than in the mega-funds.
