Our read on each fund

SYFIA
In short
EMHY Most high-yield ETFs buy American junk bonds. EMHY crosses borders instead: dollar-denominated high yield from emerging-market governments and companies, in one index-tracking, monthly-paying wrapper iShares has run since 2012.
SYFI A converted mutual fund that takes high yield short: average duration stays under four years, the bonds are picked globally rather than tracked, and the income lands monthly.
Stated mandate
EMHY The fund seeks to track an index of U.S.-dollar-denominated high-yield bonds issued by emerging-market sovereigns and corporations, providing exposure to emerging-market debt.
SYFI The Fund seeks the highest available income without taking what the Adviser views as undue principal risk. It is actively managed and normally invests at least 80% of assets in below-investment-grade debt securities and related derivatives, while maintaining average duration below four years.
