FDHYBFidelity Enhanced High Yield ETF

SPHYAState Street SPDR Portfolio High Yield Bond ETF

In short

FDHY Most high yield ETFs just buy the index. FDHY is Fidelity's active, quant-driven version: value and quality screens run against a BB-B benchmark, priced below the typical fund in the category.

SPHY State Street's junk-bond workhorse: roughly 1,900 US high yield bonds in one wrapper for 0.05% a year, a fraction of what the typical high yield ETF charges, with income paid monthly.

Stated mandate

FDHY The fund seeks a high level of income and may also pursue capital appreciation. It uses a quantitative, rules-based approach intended to exploit market inefficiencies.

SPHY The fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the ICE BofA US High Yield Index.

Why people hold it

  • FDHY Active where most of the category is passive. A rules-based value and quality screen picks the bonds, measured against the ICE BofA BB-B US High Yield Constrained Index.
  • 0.35% a year undercuts the 0.40% median for high yield ETFs, unusual for a fund with a manager and a research process behind it.
  • Income lands monthly, and the strategy has been running in ETF form since 2018, not a recent launch chasing a theme.
  • SPHY 0.05% a year against a peer-group median about eight times higher. In high yield, the fee comes straight out of coupon income, so the gap does real work.
  • Holds about 1,900 bonds tracking the ICE BofA US High Yield Index, broad enough that no single issuer's trouble dominates the portfolio.ssga.com
  • Live since 2012, a multi-billion-dollar fund that trades actively and has stuck tightly to its stated index rather than drifting from the mandate.
  • Distributions arrive monthly, in step with how the underlying coupons come in.

Worth knowing

  • FDHY Plain index rivals cost a fraction: SCYB at 0.03% and SPHY at 0.05%. You are paying for the selection process, so it has to earn the gap.
  • About 300 bonds is a tighter net than the broad trackers that own the whole market, so individual credit calls carry more weight here.
  • Trading is moderate rather than heavyweight next to the largest high yield ETFs, which can matter on bigger or faster orders.
  • SPHY This is below-investment-grade credit. Defaults and spread moves drive the price far more than Treasury yields do, and sell-offs in this asset class can be sharp.
  • Fees here are already near the floor: SCYB lists 0.03% and HYLB matches at 0.05%, so the cost edge over the strongest peers is narrow.
  • Scope is US high yield corporates, full stop. No investment-grade ballast, no emerging market debt, nothing to soften a credit drawdown from inside the fund.ssga.com

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
